After its initial announcement at a Nintendo Direct in 2019, developer Onion Games has revealed a release date for the Western version of its 1997 RPG Moon for the Nintendo Switch. Although it is not as widely known as titles like Chrono Trigger, Moon has been listed as an influence by massively successful RPG creators.
Originally developed by the Japanese company Love-de-lic, Moon was lauded for its subversion of existing RPG tropes. The game’s recent revival by Onion Games is headed by one of the game’s writers and designers, Yoshiro Kimura.
In a YouTube trailer released on the developer’s official YouTube channel, Onion Games discussed Moon’s legacy as an “anti-RPG” in the video’s description. This explanation briefly told viewers that the game specifically sought to defy the conventions of “breaking into houses” and killing “innocent” monsters before diving into Moon’s narrative premise.
After displaying gameplay where the game’s protagonist catches lost animal souls and interacts with characters, the trailer revealed that Moon will be available on August 27, 2020. Experienced RPG fans and eagle-eyed newcomers will likely also notice that the clock in the left hand corner, which represents how the characters and environment operate in real time.
Hopefully, Switch players take this opportunity to see a game that influenced indie hits like Undertale. As the world grows more unstable, indie game fans and RPG lovers might find comfort in a more sympathetic, relaxing title.
Moon will be available exclusively for the Nintendo Switch on August 27, 2020.
