The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommend that people wear face masks in public to reduce the spread of COVID-19, especially when other social distancing measures are difficult to maintain. Still, generic surgical masks are downright unsightly and boring to some people.
Enter Spec Direct. The Japanese company is now taking pre-orders for its new LED illumin-ON Illumination Twinkling Mouth Cover, which has been inspired by gaming. The face masks, which come in four flash patterns, can be charged via micro USB cable and light up in seven colors — red, green, blue, yellow, light blue, purple, and white.
The masks come in black or white and include a small, concealed controller on the side to alternate between colors and flash patterns. The masks, which take 3.5 hours to charge, last for approximately 10.5 hours for a single color, or 7.5 for a flashing sequence. Equipped with a nose wire for a snug fit, the masks, which weigh a little over two ounces, also come with adjustable rubber straps.
Although not medically approved, the mask has an aperture to add a disposable filter. It also can’t be washed since it has electrical components. The CDC, however, states that even non-surgical masks can prevent people who have COVID-19 from spreading the virus to others and can block the spread of COVID-19 from person to person through respiratory droplets.
Around the world, gaming venues are slowly reopening. In Italy, where all gaming venues were closed when the country entered its lockdown on March 10, operators were able to reopen in June. However, venues are only permitted to remain if they follow strict measures enforced by the government to help protect staff and customers.
Measures include the requirement that both employees and gamers wear protective face masks when inside the venue, installing hand sanitizer stations, placing signage to promote social distancing, and taking the temperature of visitors before they can enter. Until there’s a vaccine, masks will be essential for gamers returning to public venues.
The new LED illumin-ON Illumination Twinkling Mouth Cover, which is being sold for 2,970 yen or $28, will begin shipping after September 11.
