When Pokémon GO was released be in 2016, it was one of the greatest games that fans of the anime could have ever hoped for. The ability to physically go out and “catch” Pokémon was so magical that it was almost a dream come true. As we walked around catching everything we could, we also formed friendships with our fellow trainers. Of course, those friendships can sour over time and lead to rivalries that may get a little too real.
In Hokkaido, Japan, 56-year-old Kanehisa Satoh and his friend were playing Pokémon GO in their car when an altercation happened. Apparently the two men were at a Pokémon gym when Satoh became angry with his friend. “I got pissed because he had gone ahead and took my encampment," Satoh said in a statement to police.
Presumably, after an argument, Satoh got out of the car, walked around the front, and grabbed his friend by the shirt. He also decided to kick the side-view mirror of the car, destroying it. The friend, justifiably frightened and angry, decided that they could not settle their differences as friends and he needed to call the police. Luckily, they were not too far away, and they were able to arrive at the scene quickly.
Upon arrival, they quickly arrested Satoh and charged him with assault and property damage. Satoh did not challenge the charges and accepted responsibility for what he had done.
As fun as it is to compete with your friends and get the better of them every once in a while, it is not important enough to get in a fight with them. Many of us have yelled at friends for cheating or messing something up, but even then, things can get out of hand very quickly. Before you ever get to that point, make sure to take a breath and remind yourself that you are only playing a game.
Also, Pokémon is about friendship. So maybe don’t physically assault people over something that can be solved with a few potions and revives.
