In a shocking announcement this morning, noted investigative journalist Jason Schreier revealed he will be departing from publication Kotaku at the end of the week. Having been with the outlet for eight years, Schreier has been responsible for unveiling the ugly inner workings of some of gaming’s biggest studios. Even if you weren’t previously aware of his name, you’ve likely read his work on BioWare, Rockstar Games, and Gearbox.

In a post on Kotaku, Schreier explains that he will be sticking to journalism for the foreseeable future. While not expressly stating the reason for his departure, it seems to be linked to management changes over at Gawker Media. Regardless of the why, his first order of business after leaving will be finishing up his second book. After that, he’ll be starting his own outlet to continue his investigative pieces.

Many may not exactly agree with Schreier’s views on specific games, but the man has provided an indelible service to this industry. If not for his deeply researched exposes on troublesome developers, the people creating the very things we love would still be suffering. No one should have their lives negatively affected to create a video game, regardless of how much you want it.

We at TheGamer wish Schreier the best of luck with his future endeavors.
