Blizzard is hiring for a principal designer to start working on a brand new PvP shooter game.

We here at TheGamer are a little confused. There’s a new job posting on Blizzard.com that suggests that the company that made Overwatch is in the market to make another competitive shooter game. The question is: why?

We know that Blizzard has already tapped Dustin Bowder, the former head of StarCraft 2 and Heroes of the Storm, to lead the new project as its director. This means that whatever the new game will be called needs to have a senior or principal designer to work under him, thus we have a job posting here.

“Blizzard Entertainment is looking for a talented and experienced Senior or Principal Designer with experience in developing weapons, abilities, and gameplay systems in action or first-person shooter games,” reads the posting. “As a Senior or Principal Designer, you’ll work with numerous departments to shape the core gameplay experience for this unannounced project by defining the abilities, powers, and weapons our players will use.“

The requirements for such a prestigious job are naturally pretty steep. Five years experience in the games industry is a minimum. Blizzard also requires that the successful candidate has shipped a successful AAA game, which considering the time it takes to develop blockbuster titles nowadays probably means you’ve only got the one game under your belt if you only have the minimum 5 years experience.

All we know about this game is that it’s a PvP shooter, which sounds a lot like Overwatch. But it’s way too soon (at least, from Blizzard’s perspective) to make an Overwatch replacement. Blizzard’s wildly successful team-based shooter is less than two years old and is serving as the basis for a Blizzard eSports league. Tossing Overwatch out even for a sequel would throw the Overwatch League into turmoil.

Blizzard could be doing what everyone else is and making a battle royale game of some kind, but that doesn’t seem like Blizzard’s style.

We could be in for a shooter set in the Diablo or StarCraft universe, or we could be in for yet another totally new universe. Or maybe it’ll be a battle royale game but with all Blizzard’s characters–sort of like a Heroes of the Storm, but riffing off PUBG.

For now we’ll have to wait and see. Maybe we’ll learn more at E3.
