If you were expecting to get more information about the upcoming Xbox Series X (like, say, a price), then I’ve got some bad news for you. Microsoft’s Aaron Greenberg recently confirmed that this month’s Xbox Games Showcase will be taking the “Games” part of its name literally. There will be no information about the Series X, just an hour of different games coming to current and next-generation platforms.
We do know that we’ll finally get our first look at campaign footage from Halo Infinite. We’re also bound to see something from Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. Apart from that, it’s anyone’s guess what this 60-minute stream will have.
That’s a lot of time to fill with no information about the new console. It also seems like a missed opportunity to assuage fears that Microsoft’s latest device may be above $400. There’s still not a lot known about the next-generation and both Microsoft and Sony aren’t in any rush to talk about it.
As for what I expect to happen outside of the already announced games, I anticipate trailers for Battletoads, Psychonauts 2, and possibly those rumored Perfect Dark and Fable sequels. The company has to have something big going into the launch of the Series X aside from Halo and Cyberpunk 2077 (which is third-party).
Today’s news of Project xCloud being bundled with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate is obvious for a highlight. With speculation running around that the service might come to Switch, we could also see that announced during the show. That might fall a bit into the business side of things, so maybe that’s a stretch. It would be absolutely wild, however.
At any rate, Microsoft needs to do better than its May stream. Expectations were through the roof and the company did nothing to quell rumors. People wanted the world and got a fairly sub-standard stream, which unintentionally made Sony’s PS5 reveal event seem like a bigger deal than it was. Both companies have a lot of work to do to sell us on the idea of next-generation and now is the time to start talking.
You’ll be able to catch the July Xbox Games Showcase on July 23, 2020, at 12 pm EST/9 am PST.
