Originally released in 2004, the Japanese third-person puzzle-action video game Katamari Damacy, went on to become quite the sleeper hit, leading to a series of successful sequels. The first game was eventually followed by an HD remaster called Katamari Damacy Reroll for PCs and the Nintendo Switch back in 2018 and now, it looks like a physical release of the remastered game for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One is on its way.
Although news broke earlier this month that a physical release of the remaster would happen in Japan, until now it wasn’t certain when or if the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One versions would make their way to the US. New information confirms that the release will happen in both North America and Japan on November 20th.
This information comes by way of an article from Anime News Network which also included the official game description from Bandai Namco Entertainment America. The blurb seems to be from the Nintendo Switch release reading in part: “Katamari Damacy REROLL will feature remastered graphics and cut scenes as well as new motion controls optimized for the Nintendo Switch.” Obviously, the PlayStation and Xbox versions won’t likely include “controls optimized for the Nintendo Switch.”
For those unfamiliar with Katamari Damacy, the puzzle game centers on the son of The King of All Cosmos. After The King inadvertently knocks all the stars from the sky, The Prince is charged with creating their replacements. To do so, The Prince must go to Earth and roll around “his adhesive Katamari ball,” amassing giant spheres as he goes.
In terms of the Nintendo Switch version of the remaster, players were able to “move The Prince around with ease by simply turning their wrists,” making use of “the left and right Joy-Con controllers while the Nintendo Switch is in TV mode or Tabletop mode.” There was also a multiplayer option.
Overall, the forthcoming release of Katamari Damacy Reroll is sure to be appreciated by PlayStation and Xbox users who weren’t able to enjoy the remaster back when it was first released. Although Bandai Namco Entertainment did release a mobile game back in 2017 called Amazing Katamari Damacy, these console remasters are a major way for new audiences to discover a classic game on a modern system.
