Many fans might be a bit surprised to hear that a new Kingdom Hearts game is already set to be released. Melody of Memory was announced almost out of nowhere and left many fans confused about its existence. Like Chain of Memories before it, this game departs from the traditional formula of the series to throw fans into a unique gameplay experience.

As the title suggests, Melody of Memory revolves around music and the memories of different characters from the series. What type of gameplay should fans expect from this title? Does it tie into the main story or can fans skip this game? Is it a must-play? Here are some questions about Melody of Memory, answered.

10 Is it Important to the Story?

Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory is going to contain new bits of story that will be important to the series but won’t take the place of Kingdom Hearts 4. The game’s story is told by Kairi, who will take players on a walk through the past events in the series while giving some hints about The Master of Masters.

Melody of Memory is also set to tell more about Kairi’s past, something many players have been interested in since the first game.

9 Is There Any Action?

There is no traditional action in Melody of Memory; instead, players will have to adapt to a rhythm-based battle system. This battle system will have players defeat enemies while keeping to the beat. Players still must jump, use magic, and swing their weapons in order to survive the mission.

The gameplay should be similar to other rhythm games on the market, but many of the notes or dance moves have been replaced with attacks.

8 Who Do You Play As?

You don’t just play through the game as Kairi or Sora. Instead, you will get to play as a wide range of characters from the series, including Roxas, Riku, and Terra. In total, though, there are a little over 20 characters available to play in the game that fans will be familiar with.

The roster will also include Disney favorites such as Peter Pan, however, Melody of Memory will focus more on Kingdom Hearts’ original characters.

7 How Many Songs Are In It?

The game’s creators state that Melody of Memory will have over 140 songs to choose from. The songs should be familiar to those who have already played the previous entries and are meant to touch on most of the key moments from the series; even the title song Simple and Clean will be present.

With the exception of some tweaks to the intro and outro song, the soundtrack should match the previous games.

6 Are There Disney Songs?

Yes, there are Disney songs included in the game. Some notable songs that will be featured in Melody of Memory are Under The Sea, Let It Go, and This is Halloween. In addition, the worlds that the music is associated with will act as the backdrops for the songs, giving the campaign even more depth.

While Melody of Memory may not focus on the Disney aspects, some fan-favorite songs are still included.

5 Which Games Does it Feature?

Melody of Memories doesn’t skip out on any of the games in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Everything from the very first game to 358/2 Days will be present, highlighting the fact that the non-numbered entries are crucial to Square Enix’s series. Some music is even brought in from the Final Remix versions of the games to ensure that all of the most memorable tracks are accounted for.

Even Re:coded is featured in the tracklist, which surprised many fans of the series.

4 Is it Single-Player?

Melody of Memory has both a multiplayer and a single-player mode. To finish the game, players don’t need to worry about partnering up with strangers online. The whole campaign can be played using the single-player mode, and the online option should be looked at as a bonus.

No songs are locked between a co-op only wall, making every track available for solitary gamers.

3 How Does Co-op Work?

There are a few different types of co-op available to choose from. For starters, up to eight players can play together in a single game. Melody of Memory can be played using couch or online co-op. Players can also choose whether to play together in songs or face off against each other.

In battle mode, the player with the highest score will win, adding a competitive aspect to the game.

2 Is It Difficult?

Rhythm games are notorious for being either amazingly easy or impossibly difficult. Luckily, there is a difficulty selection menu in the game that will allow you to tailor the game to your needs. Melody of Memory does a good job of keeping true to the difficulty modes while still making the gameplay a challenge for players.

The battle system is something non-rhythm gamers will need to get used to in order to challenge hard mode.

1 What is it Available on?

The Kingdom Hearts series does tend to bounce around when it comes to what platforms certain games are released on. Luckily, Melody of Memory made things easy by being available on Nintendo Switch, Xbox One, and Playstation 4. The game will also be compatible with new generation consoles, making it quite accessible.

As of right now, there are no plans to bring Melody of Memory to PC or to mobile devices.
