The Kingdom Hearts franchise is no doubt a series of AAA adventures. Even the portable versions are meaty RPGs. That said, they are all actually fairly short compared to other Square Enix games. The longest game in the series doesn’t take that much time to complete.
It’s worth pointing out that there are many ways to play through a Kingdom Hearts game. Players can go through the main story exclusively, the main story plus extras, or for completionists, going after trophies and everything in-between.
10 Longest: Kingdom Hearts (26.5 Hours)
Every Disney world in Kingdom Hearts is only about a two to three hour affair. There are reasons to go back for extras, but playing through them is like experiencing the classic films all over again albeit in a new Japanese context with a slightly long director’s cut. It may seem daunting to see so many worlds in the game, but before one knows it, credits will roll. It can easily be beaten around twenty-six and a half hours.
9 Shortest: Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days (26.5 Hours)
About as long as the original Kingdom Hearts, 358/2 Days follows Roxas’ life leading up to the start of Kingdom Hearts II. Unlike the first game there aren’t as many extras to get that are worthwhile. The game also features heavy multiplayer integration that’s held back by the Nintendo DS’ hardware.
8 Longest: Kingdom Hearts III (28.5 Hours)
It seems odd that the newest entry in the series is so short, especially compared to to the first Kingdom Hearts. Players seem to clock out with the campaign around twenty-eight and a half hours. Even though the worlds are bigger, there aren’t as many and the game’s intended prologue was actually released as a separate entry altogether.
7 Shortest: Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance (23 Hours)
Dream Drop Distance focused on Sora and Riku as they both go through each world at the same time. But due to a sleeping spell, players can only inhabit their bodies for so long. That means that even with a mirrored campaigns, completing the whole game requires playing as Sora and Riku side by side.
6 Longest: Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep (29.5 Hours)
Slightly above that playtime, with twenty-nine and half hours, is Birth by Sleep. The final playtime is split across three campaigns between Aqua, Terra, and Ventus. That said, worlds are much shorter than a console Kingdom Hearts so completing each campaign, if one is talented enough, only takes ten hours or so. Extras, of course, will extend that playtime.
5 Shortest: Kingdom Hearts: Chain Of Memories (19.5 Hours)
Chain of Memories features a split campaign between Sora and Riku. Upon beating the game as Sora, players unlock Reverse/Rebirth– a post-game detailing what Riku was up to before, during, & after the events of Chain of Memories.
Even with that in mind, players can breeze through the game in around nineteen and a half hours. Riku’s campaign is faster as his strength stat is stronger than Sora’s. That means there is potentially less need for grinding.
4 Longest: Kingdom Hearts II (32 Hours)
Having Kingdom Hearts II be the second to last longest main campaign in the series makes sense. At the time, the team at Square Enix was hungry to improve everything that didn’t quite work in the original release. So the gameplay was more fluid, the graphics were better, and overall it was just a bigger adventure. Thirty-two hours may not seem like that much longer compared to the original’s, but there is more to KHII than the campaign.
3 Shortest: Kingdom Hearts Re:coded (16 Hours)
There isn’t much to say about this. More so than the other DS spinoff, Re:coded is something easily skippable. The HD remasters turned the relevant parts into a movie. It’s just another rehash of the first Kingdom Hearts, but without the charm. For completionists wishing to play every title, it should be noted it’ll only take about sixteen hours to beat.
2 Longest: Kingdom Hearts: Union X (99+ Hours)
This game potentially has unlimited hours in it. That’s par for the course for a mobile game so it shouldn’t be that surprising.
And with the new Xehanort chapter built right in, the journey is even longer now. Union X has typical mobile game gacha tactics, but it is also crucial to the series’ lore. Everyone has a phone so chip away at it bit by bit.
1 Shortest: Kingdom Hearts 0.2: Birth By Sleep - A Fragmentary Passage (3 Hours)
This was a prologue included in the Kingdom Hearts HD 2.8 collection. Despite the long winded name of this entry, this “game” is anything but. It follows Aqua through her journey into darkness. At most, it will take three to four hours to get everything, but it can easily be completed at half that speed.
