While The Last of Us Part II has been a mixed bag in terms of fan reception, the game should be unquestionably noted for its in-depth mechanics and intricate design. One such example of this is a detail regarding enemies struck by bottles.

In The Last of Us Part II, beer bottles can be thrown at enemies to distract them or disorient them, allowing you to sneak by or attack while they are thrown off. It’s a highly effective strategy that was also present in the first game.

However, upon shattering, the glass shards end up sticking to the faces of enemies struck by the bottles. One Reddit user pointed this out with the screenshot seen below.

Showing both an infected and non-infected enemy, bottles will affect opponents in multiple ways. As well as deep cuts on the face, it’s possible to see glass shards sticking onto and out of the faces of enemies. It’s a gory sight, though it only further exemplified Naughty Dog’s prowess in detailed game design and development.

The detail extends past combat design, however. Collectibles are also nuanced and detailed. For instance, there is a collectible card that allegedly pokes fun at Naughty Dog game director Neil Druckmann. The card includes a description about the fictional Dr. Uckmann who was known for “questionable experiments in the realm of pushing human limits.” This is another way of taking a jab at the crunch culture that was documented leading up to The Last of Us Part II’s release.

Despite upset over story elements of The Last of Us Part II, the game has been enormously successful. It has become the fastest-selling PS4 game of all-time and has received critical praise all-around. Its visceral gameplay and fantastic performances have earned it a spot as one of the PS4’s highlights and a landmark title for a generation. The brutal gameplay and variety of mechanics set it apart from other releases on the system, and the story does an excellent job of continuing the momentum from the first title.

The game may have invoked a lot of controversy, but this has not impeded its success by any measure.
