The Last of Us Part II rarely skips any beats when it comes to details, from narrative to gameplay, which is proven in part by the wear and tear gas masks experience throughout the game’s lengthy campaign.
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie will occasionally be required to wear a gas mask, often in places with spores or highly toxic locations.
Enemies, both of the human and infected assortments, will brutally attack you no matter what type of environment you’re in, gas mask or no. With a gas mask on, it will bear part of the brunt of the attacks and will crack over time, according to Reddit user davidpiksi.
Fortunately, there is no negative gameplay impact from this feature. The game doesn’t do something like blur your vision or disorient Ellie, but it is a neat detail that demonstrates Naughty Dog’s attentiveness to creating one of the most in-depth post-apocalyptic experiences possible.
Other cool details in The Last of Us Part II include the ability to crack safes without codes by listening for the clicking sound when you hit the right number and shards of bottles staying stuck in the faces of enemies. Admittedly, the latter is a detail less practical than the former but contributes equally to The Last of Us Part II’s rounded experience nonetheless.
No matter Naughty Dog’s attention to detail, The Last of Us Part II has received a mixed reaction since its release, to say the least. Some criticized the plot for certain narrative choices while others praised it for its ambition. Gameplay has been a mostly well-received element of the game, refining gameplay from the first Last of Us title with improved combat and impressive presentation. Simply put, the game has mostly been a triumph for the PlayStation 4, and like The Last of Us before it, a great swan song for Sony’s console.
There are currently no DLC plans for The Last of Us Part II, according to game director Neil Druckmann. So until Naughty Dog announces its next project, we’ll just have to dedicate our time to The Last of Us Part II replays.
