In the recently updated “Platinum Titles” list on Capcom’s website, Resident Evil 7 has taken a top spot among the entire series. According to the latest sales figures, the first-person, VR enabled sequel to the series has become the second best selling title in Capcom’s history. That’s incredibly impressive for what was initially seen as a major departure for the brand.
There is one caveat to mention here. Capcom isn’t counting re-releases of Resident Evil 4, 5, and 6 on this list. While 5 and 6 are right after 7, only the Xbox 360, PS3, and PC installments are tallied up. That knocks off an additional three million units for each version, which would put them closer to Monster Hunter World’s insane numbers.
Still, that’s incredibly impressive for a game that could be considered an entirely different series. I feel Resident Evil 7 plays similarly to the original Resident Evil, just obviously from a new perspective. That’s likely what propelled the game up the sales charts since it had been a long time since Resident Evil felt scary.
At any rate, here is the now updated “Platinum Titles” list from Capcom. Resident Evil accounts for about 50% of it:
- Monster Hunter World (PS4, Xbox One, PC, DL) – 16.1 million Resident Evil 7 (PS4, Xbox One, PC, DL) – 7.9 million Resident Evil 5 (PS3, Xbox 360, DL) – 7.7 million Resident Evil 6 (PS3, Xbox 360, DL) – 7.6 million Resident Evil 2 (PS4, Xbox One, PC, DL) – 7.2 million Street Fighter II (SNES) – 6.3 million Monster Hunter World: Iceborne (PS4, Xbox One, PC, DL) – 5.8 million Resident Evil 2 (PS) – 4.96 million Monster Hunter Freedom 3 (PSP, DL) – 4.9 million Street Fighter V (PS4, PC, DL) – 4.7 million Monster Hunter Generations (3DS, DL) – 4.3 million Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate (3DS, DL) – 4.2 million Monster Hunter 4 (3DS, DL) – 4.1 million Street Fighter II Turbo (SNES) – 4.1 million Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP, DL) – 3.8 million Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate (3DS, Switch, DL) – 3.6 million Devil May Cry 5 (PS4, Xbox One, PC, DL) – 3.7 million Resident Evil 3 Nemesis (PS) – 3.5 million Street Fighter IV (PS3, Xbox 360, DL) – 3.4 million Dead Rising 2 (PS3, Xbox 360, PC, DL) – 3.1 million Devil May Cry 4 (PS3, Xbox 360, DL) – 3.0 million Resident Evil (PS) – 2.8 million Dead Rising 3 (Xbox One, DL) – 2.8 million Resident Evil (PS3, DL) – 2.75 million Resident Evil 3 (PS4, Xbox One, PC) – 2.7 million
