Twitter users have discovered the iconic “Thwomp” blocks from the ever-popular Mario franchise are finally up and thwomp-ing at Universal Studios Japan’s upcoming Super Nintendo World.
The upcoming theme park based on the Super Mario video game franchise has been making steady progress over the last few months, so much so that Universal Studios park-goers have been able to catch sneak peeks of what’s to come from the outside.
Take the most recent discoveries from Twitter users @chizuoo and @usj_ruilove, who were able to capture some footage of the signature Thwomp blocks in action! As Super Nintendo World isn’t open yet, these videos were taken from quite a distance away. Despite that, you can clearly see the blocks moving up and down, just like they do in the Super Mario games!
The replies on both tweets have been positive, with many excited and eager fans expressing how they can’t wait for the park to officially open.
Super Nintendo World was originally scheduled to open Summer 2020 to coincide with the Tokyo Summer Olympics. However, the COVID-19 pandemic has since stalled plans. According to the latest report from Nintendo, the park’s opening has been delayed indefinitely. Super Nintendo World is now planned for an opening sometime in 2021, though no specific timeline has been revealed to the public at this time.
Despite this setback, construction on the park appears to have been going smoothly. Last month, a number of videos began appearing on Twitter showing other aspects of the upcoming park in action, including a moving Yoshi and spinning coins. Another Twitter user (@ihc_aaayyyaaa) was able to get overhead shots of the park, which revealed that everything from Bowser’s castle, Koopa Troopas, Pirahna Plants, and Peach’s castle are already up in the park.
A few weeks ago, when asked at a shareholders meeting about how Super Nintendo World would be handling the eventual opening of the park in light of the uncertainty of the coronavirus, Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo game developer and head of the Super Nintendo World theme park project, said he and his team were working to prioritize safety and guests’ peace of mind.
Super Nintendo World is currently under construction now.
