Godzilla is coming to Magic: The Gathering. This is not a drill. Please stay in your homes and await further instructions.
The new Magic set, Ikoria: Lair of Behemoths, is going to arrive in just a few weeks. Coronavirus delays mean that physical cards have a bit of a flexible schedule, but Ikoria will come in digital form for Magic Arena on April 16th.
Also, Godzilla is in it. No, really–there are cards called “Godzilla.”
Wizards of the Coast teamed up with Toho Ltd. (y’know, the famous Japanese movie studio that made the original Godzilla films) in order to bring Godzilla to Magic: The Gathering. Since Ikoria is a set all about kaiju-style monsters, it seemed a perfect fit.
Before you get too excited about an honest-to-goodness card being named “Godzilla,” that’s not quite how this works. There are 16 Monster Series cards (with 3 more exclusive to Japan) that are basically renamed and re-arted versions of cards that are already present in Ikoria. So casting a card named “Godzilla, King of the Monsters” is actually the same as casting “Zikortha, Strength Incarnate.” They’re the same card mechanically, just have slightly different presentations, and you can’t double up to have both Zikortha and Godzilla in the same deck.
But who cares?! You get to play with the real frickin’ Godzilla in Magic!
