As if you needed any other reason to get one of LEGO’s upcoming Super Mario sets, Nintendo has revealed that future “Power-Up Packs” will include Cat and Fire Mario. In a new short video going over the upcoming expansions, we get to see the two aforementioned transformations along with Propeller Mario and Builder Mario. It seems LEGO is going hard on the game references.
The way everything works is that Mario’s head is a detachable unit. With that, you’ll plug into the various power-ups, and Mario will gain new abilities. It’s not exactly like in the games (where Mario will power down when taking damage), but it’s a creative way to make use of the special tech that powers the main Mario toy.
It also opens the door for future upgrades in the future. Could we eventually see Penguin or Cloud Mario make an appearance? Imagine getting a whole set of toys focused on Super Mario Galaxy. Now I want LEGO is just plain adapt Mario’s entire history so I can pretend I’m a child again.
These various packs will be released on August 1, 2020, which is the same day the main Mario kit will be available. That gives you a ton of options for entertaining your kids this summer. It could be a nice present for the start of the school year, especially since the coronavirus pandemic will likely keep your children home for the remainder of 2020.
What I do have to wonder is if LEGO will introduce Luigi to this lineup. It wouldn’t be Super Mario without the plumber’s perpetually scared brother. LEGO could even reuse these kits with Luigi, though I guess the hats and colors would need to change. It would really be fun to see the two in LEGO form, is all.
When the collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO was announced, I didn’t expect such innovative technology to be incorporated. Leave it to Nintendo think outside the box, shying away from a more traditional LEGO kit. This kind of toy would have blown my mind back in the 90s and I’m happy that younger generations will get a chance to experience a new kind of magic.
