GTA Online is still so popular and continues to make Rockstar so much money, that gamers should give up hope of anything new from the studio any time soon.
When what was a terrific reveal event on Sony’s part for the PS5 a couple of weeks ago kicked off with a Rockstar announcement, every viewer’s attention would have piqued. Finally, a trailer for what is coming next, whether it be Grand Theft Auto VI, a Bully sequel, or anything at this point.
Turns out it was a major troll job by Sony and Rockstar. Kicking off the show with an announcement as big as GTA VI would have made sense, hence the below trailer’s placement. The trailer is actually for an “enhanced edition” of GTA V which will be coming to PS5, and presumably Xbox Series X although that is yet to be confirmed.
GTA V’s inclusion on the PS5 launch roster should be evidence that Rockstar’s sole focus is on GTA Online right now, and that will continue for the foreseeable future. GTA V has become the third best-selling game of all time, and its online community is massive to this day. There’s has been no word on how many people play GTA Online since 2014, but even back then it was a very impressive 33 million players.
As people continue to flock to GTA Online, and the money continues to roll in, why would Rockstar rush to make a new game and bring a curtain down on this affluent chapter in its history? It’s not as if the studio has just left players to it either. Updates and patches continue to roll out on a regular basis, including last year’s casino addition.
Chances are Rockstar is working on something, but it will be in no hurry to have that something replace GTA V. Releasing GTA VI alongside the launch of next-gen consoles also doesn’t make much sense if Rockstar has ambitious plans for its next title’s graphics and gameplay. It will want to wait a couple of years so that it can take advantage of everything the PS5 and Series X is capable of.
