If you were hoping to grab a Nintendo Switch console soon, you may be out of luck. According to a new report from Bloomberg, lockdowns in both Malaysia and the Philippines are preventing Nintendo from producing additional units of its massively popular console. It doesn’t seem like these issues will be resolved anytime soon, either.

Ace Research Institute analyst Hideki Yasuda told Bloomberg, “The inventory may recover in the summer, but we may see shortages again toward the year-end because Nintendo wouldn’t be able to produce enough units for the shopping season.” These shortages are happening because Nintendo orders PCBs (printed circuit boards) from Malaysia and those factories are now closed, despite relaxed lockdown restrictions in the country.

Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa doesn’t believe production will be affected for much longer. He stated in an earnings call last week, “We expect the Covid-19 impact on our production to go away by summer.” That seems far too optimistic for what health officials have been stating.

For months now, Nintendo has been struggling to produce enough Switch units for buyers. Stock was ample before the coronavirus pandemic hit, but there wasn’t enough to go around once things became serious. People are looking for some kind of escape from their daily lives and the Switch’s cheaper price is perfect for that.

It isn’t Nintendo’s fault that nobody can find the console. No one could have predicted that a deadly virus would strike the world and that more and more people would be forced to stay home. While manufactured scarcity might still be a part of Nintendo’s plans (think back to the Wii-era), even it wouldn’t have maliciously underproduced Switch consoles during this situation.

It definitely sucks that not everyone is able to obtain a Switch, but having one’s health is more important. Nintendo will do its best to create more consoles, so it falls on you to be patient. Good things come to those who wait, as the saying goes. Now if only we could get some confirmation about Ring Fit Adventuresince that is turning out to be even harder to locate.
