Mario’s green-clad brother Luigi has won the latest Nintendo Dream poll as the highest voted video game character readers would most like to play as.

Japanese magazine Nintendo Dream recently published the results from its monthly polls. This month, the magazine posed a unique question that asked readers, “Which character would you like to play as?” And the results put Luigi right on the top.

Luigi came in first place in an overwhelming victory with 124 points. In the second place, with only about a third of Luigi’s total votes, was Kirby who only garnered 54 points from readers. The rest of the results were followed by Isabelle from the Animal Crossing series, King Dedede from the Kirby franchise, and Claude von Riegen and Bernadetta von Varley from Fire Emblem: Three Houses. The full results, along with point totals, are listed below:

  • Luigi (Super Mario) – 124 points Kirby (Kirby) – 54 points Isabelle (Animal Crossing) – 47 points King Dedede (Kirby) – 28 points Claude (Fire Emblem) – 15 points Bernadetta (Fire Emblem) – 10 points

Though Luigi is usually secondary to Mario in the Super Mario games, he has been a playable main character in a number of popular Nintendo games, including the Luigi’s Mansion franchise, whose third title launched for the Switch last Halloween. All games in the Luigi’s Mansion series have earned praise from critics and fans alike. Judging from the Nintendo Dream poll ranking, it appears many people have enjoyed playing as Mario’s sidekick and perhaps would like to see more opportunities for Luigi-driven games in the future.

In addition the question about playable video game characters, this month’s poll also ranked the most popular characters and most anticipated games for Nintendo.

When it came to the character poll, Kirby took the lead this time. He was followed by other popular characters from Super Mario, Animal Crossing, The Legend of Zelda, and more.

Regarding the question surrounding the most requested Nintendo games in the future, fans were most excited about a The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel.
