Players got their first extended look at Madden NFL 21 today in a new trailer that features just a select few of the dynamic player and position controls that will be available in this year’s edition of the annual release.

The reveal trailer features a lot of this year’s cover athlete, Baltimore Ravens Quarterback Lamar Jackson, while also providing plenty of gameplay footage highlighting four “new” player control mechanics.

These four new mechanics include Ball Carrier Skill Stick, New Pass-Rush Control, Realistic Open-Field Tackling, and User-Controlled Celebrations.

In terms of specifics, it’s not yet known what exactly each of these new mechanics entails, with more detailed explanations likely coming later this summer as more Madden 21 news is revealed.

“Our players are some of the most passionate in the world. They love Madden and we want to make sure we’re fulfilling what they’d like to see most in the game and delivering new features to up level each iteration,” said Executive Producer of Madden NFL 21, Seann Graddy, in a statement. “In Madden NFL 21 there are a range of authentic new gameplay improvements that both our most engaged players and any fan of football will enjoy, plus unique experiences that will allow every player to live out their NFL fantasy with more still to come.”

Honestly, it’s a bit difficult to be extra enthusiastic about any of the highlights, as it feels like these are just buzzwords that get recycled in different ways with every yearly release. The trailer touts the highlights as “innovative gameplay mechanics,” so we’ll just have to wait and see exactly what that means and how much different the actual gameplay is from last year (which was one of the best versions of Madden in recent memory).

That said, the visuals look better than they ever have before, and will no doubt be elevated by the technical capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

Fans can pre-order Madden 21 right now, with the Madden NFL 21 MVP Edition allowing for players to access the game three days before its actual release date of August 28th
