Celebrated actor Mads Mikkelsen is foraying into horror once again. Reuniting with Hannibal showrunner Bryan Fuller, Mikkelsen is set to star in the Fuller-directed film Dust Bunny.
Mikkelsen has been known to take on some intense roles. Perhaps most well known for his turn on Hannibal Lecter on the aforementioned ABC series. Mikkelsen has also appeared in cinematic fares such as Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald, Doctor Strange, and Rogue One. Mikkelsen will also soon be appearing in Indiana Jones 5. He’s known to usually take on intense, even antagonistic roles, but it looks like his next film will pair him with an unlikely partner: a little girl looking for respite from the monster under her bed.
According to Deadline, Dust Bunny will be Fuller’s feature film directorial debut and will be produced by Entertainment One and Thunder Road, with Fuller serving as a producer alongside Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee. The logline for the film involves a little girl enlisting the help of her neighbor to kill the monster under her bed, who she believes to have killed her entire family. The film as a whole was praised by Lee, who said, “We have been huge fans of Bryan’s for years. Dust Bunny is incredibly inventive and unlike anything in the marketplace and we are thrilled to help bring his first feature to life."
Mikkelsen, who has been compared to actors of such as Anthony Hopkins, has been praised by Kristen Fiergold, an executive working for Sierra/Affinity, which is handling global sales of the film. “Mads brings such a unique quality to every character he brings to life and his role in Dust Bunny will be no exception," Fiergold said. “We’re excited to bring a throwback to the family horror films of the ’80s, a beloved genre for many, to this year’s market at AFM.”
Though Mads’ character was not officially revealed, it can be extrapolated that he will be the neighbor whom the little girl seeks out for help. At first glance, it’s far cry from Mikkelsen’s work on projects such as Death Stranding, but it also makes sense for the actor. His intensity and magnetism would make him a natural person who the girl would turn to for help killing a monster.
Mikkelsen’s in pretty high demand lately. In addition to working on Indiana Jones 5, he’s been rumored to be on the shortlist for Doctor Doom in the Fantastic Four movie, and even Hideo Kojima has some ideas for projects involving Mikkelsen.
Dust Bunny is scheduled to begin production in January 2023.
