Mafia: The Definitive Edition has been out for a few days, and it’s been well-received by fans of the original game from 2002 and gamers that are new to the series. It’s a visually stunning remake that not only updates a classic open-world crime game for a modern audience, but provides a fantastic storyline for gamers that have become accustomed to half-baked single-player campaigns.
However, gamers expecting another simple open-world action-adventure will be surprised that Mafia: The Definitive Edition doesn’t follow the same rules as other games in the genre. As a result, it’s good to know a few tips before jumping into the life of a mobster and before buying the game.
10 Explore Your Surroundings
Despite being an open-world game Mafia: The Definitive Edition is a surprisingly fast-paced game that likes to push the plot forward as it sticks with the series’ tradition of gripping narratives. As a result, players aren’t given a great deal of opportunity to look around if they simply follow the game’s directions.
Even when it seems the game is pushing the player forward in a generally linear story sequence it will always be worth exploring the environment before moving on to the next scene. The game is littered with newspaper clippings, photographs, and other collectibles to pick up to add to the Trophy/Achievement collection.
9 Practice The Race Track
Players of the original Mafia game from 2002 will remember the infamous racing scene and how difficult it was to make it around the track let alone win with a near-uncontrollable 1930s racing car. In this definitive version, the racing track is a little easier manage thanks to the more responsive controls but it’s still one of the most difficult parts of the game.
Thankfully, the game lets players test drive any car in their collection on the racing track from the menu screen before jumping into the story mode. It’s a good idea to give the track a few runs before the big race to get a feel for the track’s tricky bends and obstacles first.
8 Use Straight Roads To Escape Cops
In Mafia: The Definitive Edition it’s very easy for Tommy to find himself in a bind and alerting the cops to his speeding or other criminal activities. It won’t be very long before he finds that he has several police cars on his tail chasing him through the streets of Chicago.
While it may seem tempting to use sharp turns to take corners and drive through barriers, the best way to lose the cops is to hit top speed and stick to longer straighter roads to lose them.
7 Better Car Handling At High Speeds
Of course, there won’t always be conveniently straight roads for players to escape the police or get away from other mobsters. As a result, players will need to take sharp bends and corners which can prove to be difficult at the best of times.
The best way to handle these corners is to practice how to use the handbrake turn at the right times. However, players will know that the drift can force their cars to oversteer but a great way to counter too much drift is by using the car’s ram capabilities which will force the car into driving straight. So using a combination of the handbrake and the ram boost will prove useful when on the run.
6 Always Check The Armory
When Tommy has been given his orders by the Don the player will have a bit of freedom to explore the hub area before jumping into the mission. One one of the first places that Tommy should visit first is Vinnie’s workshop to pick up as many weapons and packs of ammo as possible.
This is especially useful for those brave enough to tackle the game’s Classic Difficulty mode as ammunition will be few and far between.
5 Use The Speed Limiter
There is nothing worse than catching the attention of the police patrolling on foot or in a car when either trying to explore in peace or getting around during an important mission sequence. Players will usually attract the attention of the police because of their speeding or erratic driving.
The best way to counter this is by activating the Speed Limiter to make sure that Tommy sticks to the city’s traffic laws and avoids unnecessary gunfights and chases.
4 Utilize Cover In Gunfights
While the shooting mechanics aren’t as polished as some players would like it to be the cover shooting mechanics will still prove very useful in gunfights. There are usually lots of the cover opportunities to help Tommy fight back against other gangsters or cops.
These cover opportunities will also prove useful in indoor scenarios too as the tighter and more confined spaces can leave Tommy exposed to enemies coming from all directions. Just be sure to pick a cover spot where Tommy can see enemies coming from all directions.
3 Rapid Fire Pistols
When caught in a frantic and violent gunfight Tommy won’t always have the opportunity to pick shots and hit his enemies in the head especially when playing in the Classic Difficulty mode. As a result, preparing to fire a few rapid shots into an enemy is the best way to get them out of there.
Hitting an enemy once with a pistol probably won’t kill them in one shot but it will stun them long enough to rapid-fire another two or three hits to get the job done.
2 Use Shotguns To Clear Out Buildings
Going into an enemy building can be a daunting task on the Classic Difficulty because enemies can come from all directions and alert each other danger. However, the best way to work through an enemy stronghold is to have a fully loaded shotgun.
Not only is there very little aiming involved but Tommy can usually kill enemies with one easy shot. It’s a great weapon and can make players feel like they are The Terminator in a gangster movie.
1 Walk Through Blind Fire
The ability to blind fire can sometimes help Tommy out of a bind when he is pinned down. Unfortunately, his enemies can also use the blind fire technique to fight back when they feel pressured.
Surprisingly, the best way to tackle blind firing enemies is to walk right through it because even on the Classic Difficulty they will miss most of their shots. Better still if Tommy is armed with a shotgun he can take them out in one hit at close range and causing his remaining enemies to flee.
