The upcoming Magic: The Gathering set will be bringing back several elements of the series history. The Dominaria set is going to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the game by bringing everything back to the source and returning to the setting of many of the early Magic: The Gathering sets.
One of the most important aspects of the old Magic: The Gathering narrative was a ship, called the Weatherlight, which possessed the ability to traverse the planes. The Weatherlight was responsible for saving Dominaria from an invasion of dark forces from Phyrexia, which was planned by Yawgmoth. The story of the crew of the Weatherlight was the focus of several Magic sets over the course of four years.
With Dominaria bringing many older elements of the series back, the Weatherlight has finally been given a chance to return to the spotlight. An update has been released on Wizards of the Coast’s website which reveals some of the cards that depict the modern iteration of the Weatherlight and her crew.
The Weatherlight herself is an artifact which can be played on the field. All of the cards associated with the Weatherlight and her crew are Legends, which means that you can only have one copy of each specific card on the field at once.
All of the revealed crew members of the Weatherlight use a mixture of the five different kinds of colored mana, which means that you would need a highly customized deck to play them all. Not all of the Weatherlight crew members possess abilities that strengthen or search for their comrades, though the new rules concerning historic cards will make this a redundant issue.
The Dominaria set will introduce the historic term to the game, which refers to all artifacts, legends, and Saga enchantments. The cards based on the Weatherlight vessel and her captain are based on activating abilities/drawing cards when historic cards are played, which means the Weatherlight archetype will be heavily focused on those kinds of cards.
The Dominaria set will also be bringing kicker cards back into the game, which allows you to pay more mana in exchange for better card effects. Saga enchantments will also be added to the game (which are classed as historic cards) that act as small stories which can have huge ramifications on the battlefield as each turn ends.
The Dominaria set for Magic: The Gathering will be released on April 27th.
