The release of the next Magic: The Gathering set is just a few short weeks away and players are well into spoiler season at this point. As more Zendikar Rising cards are being revealed everyday, players who love digging into the game’s expanded lore are learning more about the conflict on Zendikar and what Nahiri is up to on her home plane. During the recent MtG livestream event a new cinematic trailer for the set offered a closer look at the planeswalker’s latest deadly adventure.
Although deep lore and complicated characters are nothing new to Magic: The Gathering, these high quality cinematic trailers for sets are an exciting new trend. The War of the Spark trailer was incredibly well-received (and a bit of as tear jerker) and the latest trailer perfectly captures the danger and adventuring spirit that are at the heart of the Zendikar setting. There are a lot of familiar motifs and an iconic Magic villain at the center of the trailer. Whether you’re a fan of the collectible card game or not, it’s hard not to be impressed by this four minute long adventure.
For those who aren’t familiar with the character at the center of this trailer, Nahiri is a Kor planeswalker who was the primary villain of the Shadows Over Innistrad block. Although she’s clearly been the adversary (and looks to be once again) she is a complicated villain with an interesting backstory and many players are big fans of her. Seeing her return for another set is definitely exciting and the events of the trailer seem to suggest that she may have a new source of power that could make her more dangerous than ever before…
Zendikar is one of Magic’s most popular locations and early buzz seems to suggest that Zendikar Rising is poised to be another massive hit for the collectible card game. The core mechanics for Zendikar Rising have all been confirmed and there are enough spoilers in the wild that players are able to start predicting popular draft archetypes and brewing up new constructed decks that will dominate standard after the upcoming set rotation later this month. It’s definitely an exciting time to be a player, even though many in-person tournaments are still not resuming. Luckily Magic Arena is still alive and well and players will be able to turn to that platform for the upcoming pre-release and launch events when the new set drops later this month.
In the coming days, we should learn a ton more about Zendikar Rising spoilers, mechanics, and more. Start studying early so that you’ll be prepared for a new standard rotation and the upcoming draft format.
