While most digital trading card games require time, devotion, and, ultimately, money to rise through the ranks, ManaRocks - from developer and publisher Rockgames - looks to shift things up in the genre when it releases later this week.

ManaRocks is currently in Steam Early Access, but will officially release on May 29th. Already, the digital trading card game possesses a “Mostly Positive” user rating (at the time of this writing), indicating that Rockgames is clearly doing something right ahead of the game’s full release. This makes sense given the Brazil-based studio’s critically-acclaimed pedigree and the fact that the game itself is funded by Brazil’s prestigious Spcine Film, TV, and Video Game Fund.

What separates ManaRocks from other digital trading card titles is that its gameplay is seasonal, meaning every new season, the meta changes and each player begins with the same basic cards. They can then unlock the remaining seasonal cards through playing and evolving their deck. In addition, ManaRocks does not contain any loot boxes or booster packs, setting an even playing field every single new season without the threat of another player paying to win.

Competitive mode features 1v1 and 2v2 gameplay, with players able to group up with friends to strategize and figure out which forces work best together for combos.

Those familiar with the digital trading card genre will likely feel right at home with the game’s interface and arenas. While ManaRocks may look like yet another Hearthstone clone, it takes mana management a step further in a system that, while a bit more complex in theory, is actually pretty easy to pick up - even for newbies to the genre.

The first official season for the game kicks off on the game’s launch date entitled, ManaRocks: Alliances Season, which puts players into the middle of the fray following the Sun Stone’s ruin aftermath. If you’d like to get a head start on the competition and start learning the ins-and-outs of the gameplay before its full release, ManaRocks is available as a free-to-play title right now on Steam Early Access.
