Dungeons & Dragons worldbuilders have until September 6 to design your best dungeon for a chance to win a share of a $20,000 prize. The Core Dungeons & Dragons Design-A-Dungeon Contest is now live, and is being hosted by Manticore Games using their Core game construction kit and game-playing platform.
In cooperation with Wizards of the Coast, Manticore Games launched the Core Dungeons & Dragons Design-A-Dungeon Contest on August 6. The Contest allows anyone willing to use the Core game construction platform to build the ultimate D&D adventure. First and second place prizes will be awarded in four categories, with a Best Overall winner taking the grand prize.
In case you’re hearing about Core for the first time, according to Manticore Games, it’s “a game construction kit, content exchange, and game-playing platform, all in one.” The platform uses the Unreal Engine, requires no coding or art skills, and allows you to create and publish immediately ready-to-play multiplayer games. Core is basically a game development studio on your home computer, with an entire community of Core users creating and sharing “hundreds of free, high quality music, sound, and art assets” online. Core is currently in open Alpha and being constantly improved by Manticore Games and via community feedback.
To get started with your entry for the Contest, Manticore Games has set up a handy D&D Contest Framework page that provides reference, tutorial, and documentation materials to get you on your way quickly and smoothly. There is also an Introduction to the Core Editor page in place that covers the Core API and Lua scripting and style guides.
Now, for the Contest incentives. You have until Sunday, September 6, 2020, @ 11:59 p.m. PDT to build your adventure in four categories: Dungeons, Caves, and Catacombs, Elemental Planes, Strongholds and Towers, and The Wilderness. You can submit adventures in more than one category as long as each entry is unique and fits the category. Check the Design-A-Dungeon blog post and the Core Contest Official Rules for the complete contest details.
Hosts Deborah Ann Woll (Relics & Rarities) and Jerry Holkins (Acquisition Incorporated) will reveal all the Contest entries at the upcoming PAX Online. Woll and Holkins will also share tales of their D&D adventures from their years of playing, and will reveal and play through the Contests’ winning entries.
