March was a pretty busy month for video game releases, including everything from expansions and next-iterations from familiar franchises, to entirely new titles jockeying for position amongst the ranks.
In our new monthly feature, we take a look at some of last month’s biggest games as ranked by Metacritic score.
Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Metacritic Score: 85 / User Score: 8.4
The direct sequel to Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom follows the story of Evan Pettiwhicker Tildrum, a young king who, after being usurped from his throne, sets out to reclaim his kingdom of Ding Dong Dell with the help of Roland, an outsider transported from another dimension, and Tani, the daughter of the leader of the Sky Pirates. Ni No Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom is a delight for fans and newcomers alike thanks to its captivatingly beautiful animation style reminiscent of Studio Ghilbi.
DJMax Respect
Metacritic Score: 85 / User Score: 8.2
Exclusively rebooted for the PlayStation 4, DJMax Respect returns for another round of fast-paced button tapping as players try to keep on time with the rhythms and beats of the game’s songs, which feature the one hundred and seven songs from the original game - released internationally in late 2008 - as well as forty new songs produced specifically for the remastered version.
Far Cry 5
Metacritic Score: 81 / User Score: 7.2
Set in modern-day Montana, players take on the role of a sheriff’s deputy tasked with taking down “The Father” Joseph Seed and members of his cult, while a violent civil-war wages on between Seed’s cult and residents of the fictional Hope County. The Far Cry series has maintained a loyal fan base throughout the years - a fan base that has already put Far Cry 5’s map editor to good use - and was unsurprisingly one of the most anticipated and popular titles to be released in March.
Assassin’s Creed Origins: The Curse of the Pharaohs
Metacritic Score: 83 / User Score: 8.1
The Curse of the Pharaohs is the third expansion for Assassin’s Creed Origins. Protagonist, Bayek, travels to Thebes to locate a mysterious artifact, but instead finds undead pharaohs plaguing the city streets and slaughtering civilians. The Pharaoh’s Curse has been unleashed upon the land due to grave robbing activities occurring in the Valley of the Kings, assigning Bayek with the responsibility to hunt down artifacts linked to each pharaoh in order to finally put them back to rest.
MLB The Show 18
Metacritic Score: 82 / User Score: 7.0
Return to the mound in MLB The Show 18, developed by SIE San Diego Studio and published by Sony Interactive. The thirteenth entry in the MLB: The Show franchise brings new features such as a batting stance editor and a more organized franchise mode allowing players to hone in on their player’s focus. MLB The Show 18 is available exclusively on the PlayStation 4.
Burnout Paradise Remastered
Metacritic Score: 82 / User Score: 7.1
Take it to the streets in Burnout Paradise Remastered, which brings players back to Paradise City for the first time since the game’s original release in early 2008. The remaster includes most of the content from the original game, updated for playing on higher-resolution displays.
Warhammer: Vermintide 2
Metacritic Score: 80 / User Score: 7.8
Warhammer: Vermintide 2 is the sequel to the 2015’s Warhammer: End Times – Vermintide. The game features five different playable characters, which are divided into fifteen different careers. The unique sets of skills and abilities are necessary as players battle against the Chaos Army and the Skaven.
Metacritic Score: 80 / User Score: 8.3
A Way Out is an exclusively co-op adventure where players take control of two prisoners making a daring escape from prison. Fueled by seeking revenge against the same person who wronged them both, the two escapees must work together to see the plan through without getting caught while, hopefully, making it out alive.
Metacritic Score: 69 / User Score: 5.2
Developed by Rare, Sea of Thieves is Microsoft Studios’ first big-name exclusive of the year, allowing players to take on the role of a pirate and sailing the high seas, facing the trials and tribulations that come with life on the ocean. While excitement for the game’s release rode high, the reception was less enthusiastic upon its release. The main criticism stems from the belief that the game has a foundation on which to build on, but is simply not fully-realized, with most players wishing there was content.
