Mario Kart Tour gets even wackier with Cowboy Wario and Nabbit joining the game as playable characters.

The duo fit right in with the game’s Kalimari Desert, which looks like it was ripped straight out of the N64 era and given a new coat of paint. Wario is also given a new car to drive called the Brown Offloader Kart so he can be given that full Western look.

These characters are limited time only for the Wild West Tour event, so rev up those engines and earn them quickly!

If you think Nabbit looks odd, you’re not alone, but he is an original character in the Mario universe. He made his debut in the Wii U launch title New Super Mario Bros U. Just like Wario, Nabbit was an outlaw who stole from Toad Houses in the game, and if you caught him, he’d reward Mario and friends with a P-Acorn.

In the Deluxe version on the Nintendo Switch, he’s actually playable and cannot take damage from enemies. He’s a pretty strange resident to the Mushroom Kingdom. Funnily enough, this is the first time he is playable in this racing franchise, despite Mario Kart 8 featuring lazy palette swaps like Pink Gold Peach and Metal Mario.

Despite Nintendo stating that their mobile games have “not reached an acceptable profit point," the publisher is still continuing on in the space. With Mario Kart Tour, Nintendo is likely trying to follow the success of Fire Emblem Heroes. New characters can be unlocked by playing Mario Kart Tour or by spending money. It also has a strange monthly subscription model, which is unheard of for a Nintendo game. The controls are also simplified for the mobile audience as opposed to its console counterpart.

With the series’ popularity and free-to-play format, Mario Kart Tour rose to over 20 million downloads, just on its first day. The game was scorched by critics for its monetary model and unintuitive portrait mode controls. However, with a recent update, a landscape mode was added, creating a slightly more conventional control input.

Mario Kart Tour is currently available on iOS and Android devices. There is currently no word on an upcoming console title in the series.
