To the delight of Marvel fans everywhere, Marvel’s Avengers was an immensely entertaining game. It was certainly fun to play, allowing fans to live out their own fantasies by wielding Thor’s hammer, Captain America’s shield, and Tony Stark’s Hulkbuster suit against wave after wave of enemies. The gang eventually triumphed in their mission to defeat George Tarleton, aka Modok, but the blockbuster title received mixed reviews among critics.

IGN gave it 6/10 and it was their 137th review of a Marvel title. We’ll now take a look at the ones they scored the highest.

10 Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace, X-Men: Reign Of Apocalypse (8.5/10)

Both Spider-Man: Mysterio’s Menace and X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse were well-received. They both released on the Game Boy Advance back in September 2001 and proved to be brilliant and entertaining titles to play.

The former’s biggest strengths was the variety of fighting techniques you could use to take down Mysterio, with the game also capturing everything about the webslinger that makes him so special. X-Men: Reign of Apocalypse didn’t set the world alight with its gameplay but it was fun nonetheless and perfect if you’re into old-fashioned brawlers. If you’ve not played either before, maybe it’s time to get the old Game Boy out.

9 Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy - Episode 4: Who Needs You (8.6/10)

Guardians of the Galaxy: The Telltale Series first released in April 2017 with Tangled Up in Blue the opening episode of the series. And while episodes two, three and five were all enjoyable, it’s Episode 4: Who Needs You that scores highest with IGN.

It’s a fun and exciting storyline, one that really sucks you in and makes you want to play it over and over again. The title delivers a few emotional punches and gives fans the chance to choose from a variety of different scenarios that impact their playing experience. It’s the perfect penultimate story and ends with the Guardians disbanding, something that’s always seemed rather unfathomable.

8 Marvel Vs. Capcom 2: New Age Of Heroes (8.7/10)

Next is Marvel vs Capcom 2: New Age of Heroes. It released on the Dreamcast, Arcade game, PlayStation 3, iOS, PlayStation 2, Xbox 360 and original Xbox over the years after initially coming out back in 2000.

It is the fourth installment in the Marvel vs Capcom series and, clearly, the best of the lot. All characters from previous games are added while you can also play as new characters Ruby Heart, Amingo, SonSon and Abyss. There’s a total of 56 you’re able to step into the costumes of and that only enhances the experience. It still stands up to this day, if you think you’re brave enough to win the biggest battles of them all.

7 Marvel’s Spider-Man (8.7/10)

For many years, fans awaited an epic Spider-Man game. And in 2018 they got it, with Marvel’s Spider-Man gracing the PlayStation 4. It allowed you to play as a more-experienced and confidant Peter Parker than ever before, lets you swing around New York City until your heart is content and also enables you to pit your waits against formidable villains such as Doctor Octopus, Electro, Scorpion and Mr. Negative.

It’s an absolute blast to play and we’re surprised it didn’t score higher. We’re intrigued to see what the sequel, Spider-Man: Miles Morales, has to offer. But if it’s half as fun as the first game, then fans are in for quite the treat.

6 Spider-Man 2 (8.8/10)

Even in this day and age where there seem to be superhero movies galore, Spider-Man 2 remains elite. The movie was a belter with Tobey Maguire, Alfred Molina and Kirsten Dunst all excelling in the roles of Peter Parker, Otto Octavius and Mary Jane Watson respectively.

And the video game was fantastic, too. Unlike the first game, you were allowed to roam around New York — even going to places such as the Statue of Liberty and Staten Island. Combat was impressive — you could even pick up people and throw them off buildings. And side quests such as taking pictures for the Daily Bugle and delivering pizza meant we spent more hours on it than you’d believe. We’re certainly not surprised it makes the podium for this list.

5 Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem (9/10)

Spider-Man games haven’t always been great, especially on mobile. We’re still not over the chastening experience that was The Amazing Spider-Man 2. But Ultimate Spider-Man: Total Mayhem is a fun game that makes up for its shortcomings.

It’s not for fans who want to swing around New York, bludgeon bad guys and save the day. But it is one for people who enjoy puzzle and word games. Or at least, was. It’s unfortunately no longer available for purchase on either iPhone or Android, having released 10 years ago.

4 Spider-Man 2000 (9/10)

Two years before the release of Spider-Man the movie, a video game of the same name starring the webhead made its way onto the original PlayStation. There was later a Nintendo 64 port, which scored a respectable 8.5/10, but we’re going with the first version. Because, with the graphical and technological advantage of Sony’s console at it’s disposal, it was immense fun.

It is the first real 3D realization of the character, allowing you to swing around New York City shooting webs, taking down enemies and generally doing anything you want. The 3D engine is described as ‘nearly flawless’ in the review and it remains a cult classic to this day.

3 Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six (9/10)

Who here remembers the Game Boy Color? If you do, then surely you remember chancing your arm at Spider-Man 2: The Sinister Six. It released in the summer of 2001, developed by Torus Games and published by Activision, and lets you take on Dr. Otto Octavius, Sandman, Scorpion, Mysterio, Vulture and Kraven the Hunter.

It could be difficult at times, genuinely pushing the limits of it’s platform. The music wasn’t the best but we weren’t fazed by that and neither, it seems, were IGN. It’s described as a ‘great appetite-whetter’ for what’s to come on the Game Boy Advance but nothing that console had to offer came close.

2 Lego Marvel Superheroes (9/10)

Few thought LEGO would be able to break into the world of console video games when they released LEGO Star Wars: Episodes 1-3 back in 2005. But they proved many people wrong and, since then, they’ve given fans titles aplenty. Everything from Indiana Jones to Harry Potter has been covered and they’ve also chanced their arm at Marvel.

Admittedly, things haven’t always been plain-sailing. Lego’s Marvel Avengers certainly didn’t the heights many were hoping for. However, Lego Marvel Super Heroes was truly epic to play. You could solve problems, batter bad guys and roam around New York with virtually any character of your choosing. The sequel was impressive, too, but failed to beat the original.

1 Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign (9.1/10)

Marvel Puzzle Quest: Dark Reign hit the small screen back in 2013, allowing Android and Windows fans to play through a variety of different situations (as the title of the game suggests). And it seems IGN were a fan, with the video game scoring a hugely positive 9.1/10.

Their review hails the ability to fight other players, advance the pilot and manage character health and progression all at the same time. It also praises the constant challenges and goals that you have to work toward, saying it exceeds expectations of its name. Quite the achievement, especially for a mobile game.
