You know what’s better than a single superhero? How about a family of superheroes! Our Marvel heroes have been around for quite a while, so they have had the time to put down roots and start having kids like there’s no tomorrow. Then after a while, their children decide to take up the hero-ing mantle, and we have brand new heroes to follow. It’s the classic cycle of life. But be warned! Some of these familial relations may come as a shock to you, and they may convolute the plot of whatever comic book series you’re reading.

Never fear though! I’m here to let you in on who’s related to who. Many of these family bonds are going to be absolutely bewildering. In the Marvel universe, alternate dimensions, time travel, super powers, and aliens exist, so you can bet that those factors can really complicate how a regular family forms. And don’t think that you can count on the Marvel Cinematic Universe to help you figure out who shares family blood. The MCU has definitely eased up on complex family trees. (For now, anyways.)

Marvel comic books have been around for a while. The superhero history contained within all those pages and panels is vast. With such a timeline at their disposal, creators have given us some of the best family drama I’ve ever seen, beating all modern reality TV shows at how mind-bending they are. Read on if you want to learn about Marvel superheroes and who exactly they are related to.

25 Did The Blue Give It Away?

Their mutant powers may be different, but don’t let that fool you. Mystique, the shape-shifting companion of Magneto, is actually the mother of Nightcrawler, the teleporting X-Man with the pointy ears and blue tail. Nightcrawler’s father is Azazel. He looks like a red-colored version of Nightcrawler.

Those X-Men movies would have played out a little differently if it had been revealed that Mystique was Nightcrawler’s mom, don’t you think?

In Daredevil 2099, it’s revealed that the Kingpin of crime sired his own worst enemy. In this story line, Wilson Fisk eliminated the original Daredevil. Little does he know that his grandson, Samuel Fisk, will take up the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen’s mantle.

Samuel, disgusted with his father’s and his grandfather’s business dealings, decides to become the vigilante that they both despised. Sadly, Samuel Fisk still has more of Wilson Fisk in him than of Matthew Murdock.

23 The Real Goddess Of The Underworld

Thor: Ragnarok introduced us to Hela, a goddess. Hela was the secret daughter of Odin whom he had exiled after realizing that her destructive habits would never cease. That makes Hela a sister to both Loki and Thor. In the comic books, the family relations were a little different.

Loki was Hela’s father.

It would have been a tad funny, you have to admit, if Hela made her debut in Ragnarok and claimed that she was Loki’s daughter. The look on Loki’s face would have been priceless.

22 Half A Panther

In the phenomenal Black Panther movie, we got to meet Shuri, T’Challa’s kick-behind younger sister. Shuri exists in the comics too, but she is not T’Challa’s straight-up sister.

Instead, Shuri is T’Challa’s half-sister.

They share the same father, but their mothers are different. In the comics, Shuri desperately covets the role of Black Panther, and she attempts to wrest it from her half-brother a couple of times. Here’s hoping this happens in the MCU! (Hopefully in a less familial-dispute kind of way.)

21 Stop Blaming Stark

I’m telling you, the MCU got it all wrong. Tony Stark was not the father of Ultron. Hank Pym, from Ant-Man, was the guy responsible for fathering that artificial nightmare. In the comic book, Hank built Ultron, but then Ultron used some strange machine hypnosis to make him forget that he built him.

To make things even creepier, Ultron grew to loathe Hank, but grew to be really fond of Janet, Hank’s wife. And I know, a machine creation doesn’t quite count as a familial relation, but that’s not how Ultron sees it.

I know, it’s confusing. The Young Avengers member Hulkling, despite having the word “Hulk” in his name, is not related to the Hulk. Weird, right? His skin is all green and everything too.

Hulkling’s real father is Captain Marvel.

(We’re not talking about Carol Danvers. We’re talking the original Captain Marvel.) Captain Mar-vell, a Kree superhero, had relations with a Skrull woman, and together they made the green-skinned Hulkling.

19 Like Father, Like Daughter

Just because he’s the size of a planet, doesn’t mean that Galactus can’t have a family. Somehow, Galactus had a daughter whom he so creatively named Galacta. (Gosh, what an ego-trip, am I right?)

Galacta is not a villainous planet-eater like her father.

She prefers to ignore the all-consuming hunger within her and tries to be a superhero to the denizens of Earth. She even lends a helping hand to some superheroes, including the Fantastic Four.

18 What Do You Get When You Mix A Witch And A Robot?

It is common knowledge among comic book readers that Scarlet Witch and the Vision are a thing. And now that the MCU is showing the relationship, everyone knows. But did you know that they had offspring?

Wanda and Vision’s children are the Young Avengers known as Speed and Wiccan. Speed has the powers of his uncle, Quicksilver, and Wiccan has the powers of his mother. I wonder why none of Vision’s qualities ended up in his kiddos.

17 A Captain For A Brother

In the movie X-Men: Apocalypse, we got to see fan-favorite mutant Psylocke as a villainous accomplice to the mega-mutant Apocalypse. But did you know she has a twin brother?

Psylocke’s twin is the superhero known as Captain Britain.

(Oh, did you not know there was a Captain Britain? Well, there is.) Where her brother is a superhero from a long-line of superheroes from other dimensions that protect Britain, Psylocke lucked out with mutant powers.

16 A Vampire For A Brother

Did you know that Doctor Stephen Strange had a brother named Victor Strange? And did you know that Victor Strange ends up becoming a vampire?

Well, good ole Doctor Strange tries to bring back his deceased brother using magic, but what he ends up doing is bringing back a vampiric version of Victor who calls himself Baron Blood. (He gets points for creativity.) Let that be a lesson to you, Doctor Strange, to never mess around with that kind of magic.

15 Brains And Brawn

Professor Xavier always seems to have skeletons in his closet that no one on the X-Men team knows about. This is true whether we’re talking about the movies or the comic books. One of those skeletons is rather large and unstoppable.

The Juggernaut is Charles Xavier’s half-brother.

Isn’t it so dichotomous to picture the crippled Xavier, who is a mental titan, as related to the gargantuan and powerful Juggernaut? I wonder how childhood spats were ever resolved between them.

14 The Future Of Ant-Man

Yes, I know it comes as no surprise that Cassie Lang, the adorable daughter of Scott Lang, is related to Scott. Their father-daughter relationship is an important part of both Ant-Man movies.

But it may come as a surprise to you that Cassie becomes a superhero in her own right. Cassie becomes Stature, a member of the Young Avengers with the same powers as her father before her. Makes you look at that little girl in a whole new light, doesn’t it?

13 Who Is The Wolf’s Father?

You guys all remember that massive wolf that Hela had in Thor: Ragnarok, right? Its name is Fenris, and I thought it was an adorable puppers. I could totally understand why Hela would want to bring him back to life. Fenris also appears in the comic books as an opponent several Asgardians have to face sometimes.

And do you want to know who Fenris’ father is? It’s Loki! Loki is said to be the father of Fenris in the comic books. I’d ask how this is possible, but these are comic books we’re talking about here.

12 Twin Problems

Here’s another skeleton in Professor Xavier’s closet. (I swear, this guy is shadier than Nightshade.)

When Xavier was still in the womb, he had a twin sister.

Sensing her vicious telepathic thoughts, Xavier basically annihilated her with his own telepathy when he was still a fetus. His sister, Cassandra Nova, survived by clinging to life as a bunch of cells, slowly amassing enough matter to give herself a new body. Yeesh, talk about needing some therapy, huh?

11 To Hulk Or Not To Hulk

Some family relations do not stem from blood but from law. The Hulk and the Red Hulk are related by marriage. The Red Hulk, more commonly known as General Thaddeus Ross, is the father of Betty Ross. Betty Ross married Bruce Banner, so that makes General Ross the father-in-law of the Hulk.

Normally, I believe the stereotype that in-laws are a nightmare to deal with is quite fallacious, but in this case, I would say relations are very, very toxic.

10 The Mutant Apple Falls From The Mutant Tree

Magneto, despite being bent on eradicating regular humans, has allotted some time to making a family. Magneto is the father of both the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver. I know this doesn’t apply to the MCU, but in any universe where the X-Men exist, the Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver have to contend with their metal-wielding father.

I find it so difficult to picture Magneto as a loving father, though I suppose X-Men: Apocalypse tried to show this side of him…right before his family got wiped out in front of him.

9 We Are Legion

Here is yet another skeleton from Professor Charles Xavier’s closet. (Seriously, how many skeletons does this guy have?) The mutant known as Legion suffers from a dissociative identity disorder in which he has different personas for each of his mutant abilities.

Legion is Charles Xavier’s son.

Does no woman who Charles Xavier has relations with ever tell him that they are pregnant? And since Xavier is a telepath, shouldn’t he just be able to know?

8 Thanos’ Bro

Big Bad Thanos has himself a brother who is everything that Thanos isn’t. Meet Eros, also known as Starfox. He’s a Titan, just like Thanos, but he does not have an obsession with Lady Death or a hankering for Infinity Gauntlets.

Starfox is described as a womanizer, and he seems like the kind of guy who doesn’t have a care in the world. But you can bet when his brother Thanos starts messing things up for mankind, Starfox sides with the superheroes.

7 Who Is Nick Fury’s Brother?

Nick Fury has a younger brother who is the exact opposite of who he himself is. (Looks like Nick Fury and Thanos have something in common.) Jake Fury, occasionally known as Scorpio, is a criminal who engages in bad activity and looks to bring down world order.

Nick Fury, on the other hand, heads the organization known as S.H.I.E.L.D. and tries to preserve world order. I wonder if we’ll ever get to see Jake Fury in the MCU.

6 Ancestors Gone Wild

You’re not always responsible for mistakes your family members make, and this is never more apparent when it comes to Kang the Conqueror. Kang is a distant relation of Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four. And by distant, I mean that Kang comes from the future.

He is a descendant of Reed Richards’ family.

It must suck to have one of your greatest enemies come from your own family line. That would make me want to stay in bed in the mornings.
