Spider-Man is definitely one of Marvel’s most popular superheroes. Spidey went from being a comic icon to becoming a full-fledged Hollywood superstar, garnering countless of fans in the process. However, portraying Spider-Man on the silver screen isn’t as easy as depicting him in the comics. Spidey isn’t just a one-dimensional superhero after all since his alter-ego, Peter Parker, is quite a complex individual. As if Spider-Man’s life isn’t complicated enough as it is, he even has to deal with a slew of sinister criminals with their own set of menacing powers.
Translating Spidey’s story onto the silver screen might be a bit of a stretch, but 2017 film Spider-Man: Homecoming managed to capture its essence accurately. The film was able to embody the complexity of Spidey’s world, from Peter’s everyday struggles as a student to his crime-fighting dilemmas as Spider-Man. Despite the film’s wonderful cinematography and presentation, there are still parts of its plot that leave fans with more questions than answers.
Who are the new characters that fans don’t recognize in the comics? Will we see more of the featured groups and villains in the future? Why are there two shockers? The film still has a lot of unsolved mysteries in its plot which leaves fans wondering if they will be addressed in future films or not. Here are 25 things to ponder about in Spider-Man: Homecoming as we delve in what could be possible scenarios for Spidey’s future on the silver screen.
25 Mysterious Michelle Raises More Questions Than Answers
Peter Parker’s eccentric friend Michelle certainly raises a lot more questions than answers given her air of mystique. Michelle isn’t exactly Peter’s future wife Mary Jane Watson nor does she play a similar role, for now at least. In fact, Michelle is often seen poking fun at Peter and his friend Ned, calling them “losers” at times.
It’s not exactly explained how Michelle’s character fits into Spidey’s world. It seems like she knows a lot about Peter but claims that it’s only because she’s “very observant.” Of course, her brief lines and unusual behavior don’t exactly help in determining her motives either.
24 A Slow Stark
Vulture has obviously revealed himself as a big threat to the public, especially after the ferry incident. Tony Stark himself was even there to address the whole situation personally. Vulture didn’t just escape from this incident unscathed, he also went on to steal Stark’s Chitauri tech cargo later on.
Stark must be getting old, too busy, sloppy or all at the same time.
Stark didn’t just let Vulture off the hook, he also failed to prevent him from stealing his own precious cargo. Stark’s advanced technology, security personnel, and influence still weren’t enough to stop Vulture.
23 Where Did Peter’s Backpacks Go?
The film showed that Spider-Man isn’t just into slinging webs, he also has a bad habit of slinging bags as well. Spidey is constantly shown throwing bags and webbing them in place. Peter Parker lost a lot of backpacks this way and he even asked Aunt May for a new one.
With great power comes many lost backpacks.
The question now is, where did all of Spidey’s missing bags go? His bag might even contain his identity so anyone who picks it up will most likely know who he is! Of course, the dissolved web traces only makes it more obvious.
22 Spider-Man: Homecoming Breaks The Continuity
While the film served as an unexpected and greatly appreciated induction of Spider-Man into Marvel’s cinematic universe, it also created some continuity problems in the process. According to ScreenRant, the film is supposedly set 8 years after the first Avengers film. However, this also meant that its timeline also contradicts the continuity that Civil War established.
This also means that the film is supposed to have happened long after Avengers: Infinity War. Perhaps time and space in superhero films don’t exactly work the same way it does in reality but it’s still odd nonetheless.
21 Ned’s Hacking Skills Don’t Make Sense
It was never really explained how Ned came to be the ingenious hacker that he is in the movie. Ned might not be among the popular clique but his top-notch hacking skills make him even better than them. It’s a wonder how a high school kid is able to override the security protocol of Stark’s technology within Spidey’s new suit.
As if that wasn’t enough, Ned was even able to contact Stark’s head of security Happy in such a short span of time. Either Ned’s too smart for his age or Stark just needs to step up his security game.
20 Spider-Man Is Not Stronger Than All Of Stark’s Team…
It’s no secret that Spider-Man is nothing short of amazing but not even Iron Man expected that he would also best Stark industries. Tony Stark had a plethora of security personnel under his wing including the elite clean-up-crew known as Damage Control. Despite the efforts of Happy Hogan along with Stark’s best security, only Spider-Man was able to apprehend Vulture?
Sure, Spider-Man is quite deceptively powerful for a high school kid. However, he’s just one person compared to Stark’s security team. It’s both spectacular and befuddling how Spidey single-handedly beat Vulture. Of course, with a little help from Ned.
19 Aunt May’s Animal Magnetism
May Parker isn’t exactly the type of person who attracts countless of suitors. While that may hold true for the older version of Aunt May, that’s not the case in the film. Some just might find this younger Aunt May attractive, and even irresistible.
Even Iron Man can’t stop thinking about Aunt May.
From Ned, the restaurant busboy to even Tony Stark himself, guys just can’t seem to resist her charm. It would be interesting to know if May was always like this all along because nobody really noticed her demeanor until now.
18 Flash Thompson Needs To Be More Than A Pest
Flash Thompson is one of Peter Parker’s biggest adversaries and this is constantly shown in the film through his incessant taunts. Flash never misses a chance to humiliate Parker both during class and outside of school. Of course, Flash doesn’t feel the same way towards Spider-Man since he’s actually Spidey’s biggest fan, according to Marvel.
Flash obviously respects Spider-Man given the way he reacted when Spidey took his car but he never really showed anything else beyond that. Flash played a huge role in the comics, from being Spidey’s loyal ambassador to eventually becoming a superhero himself.
17 Shocker Better Get Explained In Detail…
The Shocker is one of Spidey’s most iconic nemesis, a dangerous criminal with shocking capabilities. In the film, the shocker serves as one of Vulture’s henchman named Jackson Brice. While fans expected him to showcase his shocking ability, not everyone expected that he was going to bite the dust abruptly.
It’s a mystery why there were two shockers, to begin with but the man who took his place is certainly the real shocker, Herman Schultz. What’s even more peculiar is that, Jackson serves as an entirely different antagonist and his departure now leaves his future appearance in question.
16 “Damage Control” Could Mean Big Things…
The film’s introduction segment featured a familiar team of operatives who are confiscating alien technology from Vulture’s hands. This elite team that cleans mess faster than any other crew is known as Damage Control. They’re led by their hard-nosed superior Anne Marie Hoag.
While their presence in the film is quite brief, they did leave quite an impression on Vulture and his team. Their role is quite significant as they helped various heroes, even rebuilding New York after World War Hulk. It’s curious to see if they’ll be featured again or if their presence is just limited to fan-service.
15 The Tinkerer’s Disappearance
If anyone was wondering why Vulture relied so heavily on the services of one particular tech engineer, that’s because that wasn’t just any ordinary subordinate. Phineas Mason, aka The Tinkerer, is actually a formidable foe in his own right. The Tinkerer was responsible for creating the lethal technology of some of Spidey’s most notorious adversaries.
However, The Tinkerer is nowhere to be seen during the film’s final segments and it’s unclear if he was captured by the authorities or not. Only time will tell if he’ll resurface in future films as the criminal mastermind he’s meant to be.
14 MJ Goes MIA
If there’s one girl that Spidey could associate with the nickname “MJ”, it’s going to be his sweetheart Mary Jane Watson. While the film also featured a character with a similar moniker, that character actually goes by the name Michelle. Since Michelle isn’t the same MJ as Mary Jane, does this mean that Ms. Watson will eventually show up in the future?
It’s still unclear if Michelle serves as Mary Jane’s replacement or if she’s entirely different from Spidey’s future wife. Either way, both MJ’s are still intriguing characters worth looking out for in future Spider-Man sequels.
13 Vulture’s Vaporizing Weapon
Out of all of Vulture’s high-tech weaponry, the one he used to disintegrate the first Shocker looks to be one of his most powerful arsenal. Despite this weapon’s extremely lethal capabilities, Vulture was only seen using it once. A weapon of this caliber could certainly give Vulture enough oomph to take on rival groups or even Spider-Man himself.
Vulture could’ve ruled the criminal underworld with such a weapon.
Perhaps The Tinkerer kept the weapon for his own benefit or maybe it was just confiscated by authorities but either way, it simply vanished. Regardless, it was still under-utilized for something that powerful.
12 Is Aaron Davis A Friend Or Foe
When Spider-Man first met criminal Aaron Davis, they weren’t exactly hostile towards each other. In fact, Davis even gave Spidey tips on Vulture’s whereabouts later in the film. What the friendly web-crawler doesn’t know is that Davis will soon become the notorious villain known as The Prowler.
Davis even revealed hints about the existence of his nephew, which could be future Spider-Man Miles Morales. The Prowler’s introduction in the film was nothing more than a fan-service for now. This leaves fans hungry to find out more about his role in the future which is still pretty muddy given his brief appearance.
11 Scorpion Won’t Be Doing Much After Infinity War…
One of the more familiar faces in the film is the menacing villain known as Scorpion, aka Mac Gargan. However, the only time that Mac seemed threatening was during the mid-credits scene, when he told Vulture that he wanted to exact revenge on their “little spider friend.” Scorpion has a much bigger role in the Marvel universe but it’s unclear if he’ll be able to fulfill any of those given Spidey’s post-Avengers: Infinity War predicament. Of course, he won’t be planning on revenge any time soon given his own imprisonment as well.
10 Ned’s Exploding Backpack
Ned’s exploding backpack incident almost ended the lives of his classmates including his own. It’s quite hard to fathom how Ned was able to survive a blast that’s so close to him. It’s even more puzzling how he managed to walk away from the incident without being branded a terrorist.
It’s a minor bauble that could still burn holes through a plot.
Then again, Tony Stark could’ve pulled some strings to ensure that the public wouldn’t know about the dangerous Chitauri tech that’s been going around. It’s basically anybody’s guess at this point but there just wasn’t enough time in the film for its explanation nonetheless.
9 Liz Allan Could Be More…
While Liz does exist in the comics, she doesn’t exactly play the same role as the one in the movie. In the film, Liz basically was the object of Peter Parker’s affection but for her comic counterpart, it’s actually quite the opposite. Liz Allan was also part of the popular clique but she didn’t just fail to attract Peter, she fell for him instead.
It’s likely that the film incarnation of Liz might not exactly be the same person as Liz Allan. However, it’s quite perplexing how such a significantly popular girl like her can’t be seen anywhere on campus.
8 Leaving So Soon
Just when Liz was finally opening up to Peter Parker, Spidey’s handiwork had to ruin their budding relationship. Of course, Spider-Man had no choice but to stop a criminal like Vulture. However, this leaves fans to the question, what happens next for Liz?
Spidey’s elevator encounter with Liz suggests that she might have figured out his true identity. If that is indeed the case, then will Liz take revenge on Spider-Man knowing that he’s responsible for what happened to her father? Will Liz even get to see Peter again? Either way, her abrupt exit opens up many possibilities.
7 Vulture’s Little Secret
There’s no doubt that Vulture knows everything about Spider-Man’s secret identity. However, Vulture basically lets Spidey off the hook when he refused to reveal the web-crawler’s identity to fellow inmate Scorpion. Does this mean that there’s a truce between him and Spider-Man or is Vulture just plotting something far more sinister?
Vulture isn’t the type of person who forgives and forgets.
Knowing how ruthless of a person Vulture can get, it’s highly likely that he’s up to something. Regardless, he still has plenty of time to think about his next move from inside his cell block.
6 Ned The Heart-breaker
Ned isn’t exactly known for his charm. While that may be true in the film version, that’s not entirely accurate when it comes to his comic counterpart. In fact, Ned Leeds had enough charm to capture the heart of Peter Parker’s first sweetheart Betty Brant.
It’s quite hard to imagine them being friends if something like that actually happened in the film version. Will another Ned steal the heart of Peter’s girl or is this Ned actually scheming something similar? Of course, Ned will have to step his game up if he hopes to steal Spidey’s future girlfriend.
