Marvel’s Avengers has the makings of a masterpiece in there somewhere. Unfortunately, those makings are buried in a giant mess of a “games as a service” title. Since its launch, fans remained loyal only for so long waiting for things to fixed and content to be added as promised.
With the recent War Table Deep Dive dedicated to what’s coming with Kate Bishop on December 8th, it gives some hope. However, it might not be enough to bring back the 96% loss of players it has endured. So there are also several aspects that need fixing and weren’t touched upon.
10 Fix: More Communication From Devs
There are many issues with the game and while it is nice that Crystal Dynamics is working to fix things. However, one of the biggest frustrations even dedicated players are having is the lack of communication with Crystal Dynamics.
When are things scheduled to be fixed? What are they currently working on? Only once in a great while does Crystal Dynamics provide the answers. Until then, many fans who remain are stuck waiting for anything to change.
9 Excited: Time Travel
The new War Table showcased that Kate Bishop’s chapter of the story will be introducing time travel. Not only does it set up one story with this (more on that later) but it could just be the beginning. Since this is a world where the Avengers are veterans, there are many events unseen.
With time travel, it could allow players to experience things like Captain America’s past in World War II, see how Bruce became the Hulk, or even how they all assembled for the first time. More stories, more content, and more variety.
8 Fix: The Glitches
While it’s been a massive improvement since the launch, there are still a plethora of glitches. Characters are falling through the world indefinitely and some people can’t beat the story mode.
Over two months since launch and these things are still happening? That is not good. When just battling AIM robots cause the game to freak out, perhaps it’s time to hurry up with fixes. Hopefully, most of these fixes will come with Kate Bishop’s release.
7 Excited: The Maestro
Fans needed something, anything to reignite the flame this game had. AIM and the Watch Dogs quickly became stale as enemies. Well, with the War Table, fans got a massive bomb drop with the tease of an iconic Marvel villain: The Maestro, an evil version of the Hulk.
This apocalyptic future could lead to such a refreshing campaign with new enemies, new locations, and a great story. Especially since this is when Hawkeye will be playable.
6 Fix: Broken Gear System
Even before the game launched, fans have always had one complaint with the game: you can’t customize your Avengers’ looks via the gear. Doesn’t that kind of ruin the point of a gear system? This would be fine if the skins and other cosmetics were good but they are all pretty bland.
Okay well, then the stat upgrades must be worth the grind, right? Actually, no, because some players have made builds using rare gear that works better than epic gear. So not only did Crystal Dynamics attempt to copy Destiny 2, they failed at doing it in both ways. This needs to change in the future. Gamers should be allowed to create their own unique looks for Avengers and have those looks reward with balanced gear stats.
5 Excited: Kate Bishop Looks Awesome
Kate Bishop is a great character in the comics but how unique can she be from Hawkeye? Well, the quantum teleporting, sword, and bow all showcase unique skills that piqued everyone’s interest. Add the voice of Aloy from Horizon: Zero Dawn and the character finally has people excited.
Even the way she traverses the maps is visually stunning. This shows the potential of the game and other future characters like Spider-Man, Hawkeye, and She-Hulk.
4 Fix: Mission Variety
Once again, Marvel’s Avengers is meant to be the superhero equivalent of Destiny 2. So why didn’t Crystal Dynamics take everything that worked there? With Destiny, there are so many different missions and side-quests that it’s impossible to be stuck doing the same thing.
And the player gets bored with the open world, there’s still Gambits and other modes to have fun with. In Marvel’s Avengers, the missions are all the same five to ten mission types just repeated in other regions. After two months, everything post-story campaign has all become boring to get through.
3 Excited: Black Panther’s Arrival
Not only was Black Panther confirmed post-launch but fans got a quick glimpse at his helmet at the Maestro’s throne. This has many fans hoping that Black Panther is the next character to come after Hawkeye.
Not only will Black Panther likely add Wakanda as a new and fresh region but his abilities and combat could be some of the best. New enemies could come from this too along with villains like Ulysses Klau and Namor.
2 Fix: Characters Need More Abilities
One thing Marvel’s Avengers does rather well is making every hero unique and fun to play. However, the game’s skill trees are very small and quick to max out. And they provide very little change to each character’s overall stats and abilities.
Also, each character only having three heroic abilities feels disappointing. These are the Avengers, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and they feel extremely limited. They aren’t bad abilities but for an RPG, there should be more abilities; especially for characters like Iron Man, Hulk, and Thor who demonstrate a multitude of abilities over the years.
1 Excited: New Boss Fights
More than likely the Maestro will provide a challenging boss fight but so will the Super Adaptoid. During Kate Bishop’s War Table, it was revealed that AIM has developed the Super Adaptoid; a new Adaptoid that has all the abilities of the Avengers.
After months of nothing but Taskmaster and Abomination villain sectors, it will be so nice to have something different. And no, the AIM warbot villain sectors do not count. They are just more boring robots. Fans hope that Crystal Dynamics continues to release more villains into the game.
