One of the many things detailed during Marvel’s Avengers’ War Table this week was War Zones. Here’s what they are and how they will work.
Square Enix held a War Table this week during which it revealed a lot of information about the upcoming Marvel’s Avengers. That information included some exclusive Thor gameplay, two brand new trailers, and the revelation that M.O.D.O.K. will be the game’s primary antagonist. It also explained how exactly the game’s story will work in terms of the main thread and what else players will be able to do.
One of the biggest revelations that warranted its very own segment during the War Table was explaining what the game’s War Zones will be and how they will work. War Zones are co-op missions that will require a team of four players in order to complete them. We can almost feel readers who prefer to game alone collectively rolling their eyes but don’t despair, it’s not how it sounds.
There are two reasons for that. First of all, War Zones will not require players to invite their friends round in order to complete them. Nor will players be forced to pair up with others online if they don’t want to. They will have the option of teaming with one, two, or three AI heroes, depending on how many real people they want in their team. Plus, AI or not, the rest of the team will be leveled up and customized however players so choose.
Although it was implied during the War Table that completing War Zones will be mandatory, Crystal Dynamics studio head Scott Amos told GamesRadar something different. That co-op missions will not be a part of the main single-player campaign. However, they will center around battles with AIM, of which M.O.D.O.K. is the head, and contribute to leveling and powering up your team of heroes.
In a world where battle royale and multiplayer games have become the order of the day, news of Marvel’s Avengers’ co-op missions might have been hard to swallow for some. It sounds as if Square Enix has done a good job of incorporating the system so that it is all-inclusive, though. Lone players can take part in War Zones if they like, with AI companions, or skip them should they so choose.
