If you’re just loading up the beta for Marvel’s Avengers, you might be a little confused and overwhelmed when faced with all the different ratings. The game has four distinct combat related ratings, melee, ranged, defense, and heroic, along with your level and power. However, the game isn’t the best at explain exactly how each of these ratings work. This guide will help you understand exactly what you’re looking at to help you build the best hero possible.

We’ll start with the four combat ratings first, which have a couple factors that contribute to teach of them, and then finish with level and power.

Melee Rating

Your melee rating determines you base damage stat, and is determined by several factors. Your gear, passive skills, and stats all contribute to building this base damage, plus might, valor, and proficiency. These are all accumulated into a single number, which you can see broken down by highlighting it. Gear, skills and stats are all self explanatory, giving you a static buff based on that particular skill or equipment, but the others are a little more complex.

Might is calculated based on your base melee damage and your ultimate heroic charge rate. Valor is taken from your heroic effectiveness and critical hit damage. Finally proficiency is taken from your critical hit chance and perk chances. If you want to be a melee focused build, these are the stats you should be looking to boost.

Ranged Rating

Just like melee, your ranged rating is your base damage for ranged attacks from your current gear, skills, and stats. Again, highlight the number to see how it is being influenced by each of these.

Your ranged rating will come from precision, calculated from your ranged damage and assault heroic charge rate. Valor and proficiency also apply to ranged, and are determined the same way they are for your melee rating.

Defense Rating

As you would expect, your defense rating is how much damage you can take based on your gear, skills, and stats. Aside from these, your defense is determined by your resilience and resolve. Resilience is made up of your armor and support heroic charge rate, while resolve is from your maximum willpower, or health, and your willpower recovery effectiveness.

Heroic Rating

This is the first one not entirely clear by the name, but you can think of it as your ability rating since that is what it is measuring. Again, gear, skills, and stats all make up this rating. It comes from your resilience, as mentioned in the defense rating, valor, mentioned in ranged rating, and intensity. Intensity is calculated from how much status meter damage you deal and your own status resistance.

Level

Just like most videogames, you will level up as you gather experience points from defeating enemies and completing objectives. Each level you will gain one new skill point to purchase new skills, and some skills are locked until you hit certain level thresholds.

Power

Similar to other loot based games, your power level is all about your gear. The better gear you find and equip, the higher your power level becomes and the tougher missions you will be able to take on. Each mission has a recommended power level associated with it, essentially indicating the difficulty based on whether your level is at, above, or below that number.

Now that these ratings make sense, you can focus on living out your superhero fantasies.
