The Mass Effect series is widely considered as one of the greatest gaming trilogies of all time. In fact, the only major downside of getting into this franchise is the lackluster ending of Mass Effect 3. However, regardless of how the series might’ve ended, the original trilogy is nothing short of a masterpiece, and people can’t wait to get into this series once again with the release of Mass Effect: Legendary Edition.

Many companions scattered throughout the Mass Effect games have proven to be quite iconic in their own right, with Legion being one such character that most people absolutely adore. Here are ten things about this beloved party member that most Mass Effect fans aren’t really aware of.

10 One Of Its Idle Animations Is The Robot Dance, Ironically Enough

A rather odd yet funny fact about Legion is the fact that one of its idle animations in the game involves it doing the robot dance. It is a rather hilarious and self-aware thing for Legion to do and BioWare to include.

The fact that Legion beatboxes while doing this dance is the perfect cherry on a hilarious cake. This detail might not reveal much about the character overall, but it does inject a touch of personality and humor.

9 It’s A Whopping 6'6" Tall

Being a mechanical construct whose adept in the ways of warfare, it’s not a surprise in the slightest to see that Legion is massive in size, towering above others at a whopping 6'6".

This can be inferred from the 1/6th scale figurine that BioWare sells for this character, which stands at 13 inches. One need only do the math to figure out Legion’s true height.

8 Legion’s N7 Armor Design Was Initially Meant To Be A Joke

Initially, when Legion’s character design was being conceived, the BioWare staff added the N7 Armor as a joke. However, over time, the developers realized the potential of Legion’s connection to Shepard’s N7 Armor.

So, as the development of the game progressed, Legion’s background and story were elaborated upon to niftily justify the inclusion of this iconic N7 Armor on its body.

7 Legion Could’ve Been Acquired Earlier In The Game, But These Plans Were Scrapped

Early on in development, Legion’s acquisition mission was not tied to the Reaper IFF at all, and could’ve been taken on independently. This idea changed over development and Legion’s inclusion in the squad was tied to story events instead.

These early plans can be seen in the cut content for Mass Effect 2, where Legion actually has lines for areas before it can be acquired, like Omega.

6 The Player Would’ve Been Able To Leave Legion Behind On The Derelict Reaper

Interestingly enough, players actually had the option to leave Legion behind in the Derelict Reaper if they didn’t trust one of the Geth as a potential squadmate. This is reflected in a mail that the Illusive Man would send upon the completion of this mission.

This idea was scrapped later on in development, and Legion became a member of the main team the moment Shepard decides to board the Derelict Reaper.

5 There Were Several Alternate Concepts For Legion’s Character

Given the unique nature of Legion’s character, there were actually several ways in which his character was envisioned to function in Mass Effect 2. For starters, his persona was meant to be of a Geth Frankenstein with three personalities… and that’s not even touching the tip of the iceberg that are these zany concepts for Legion.

Other concepts made him out to be a damaged piece of Protean technology, a genetically engineered Krogan, and a deactivated Tank-robot that was almost a century old and required substantial investment to become a powerful party member.

4 Legion Makes A Mistake While Recounting The Events Of The First Game

Given Legion’s connection with the overarching Geth consciousness, it goes without saying that he would have substantial knowledge of the events of the first game. However, he does make a mistake while recounting these events.

Legion states that Shepard encountered Sovereign on Ilos in the first Mass Effect, but this event actually occurred on Virmire. Whether this is an error on the side of the developers or a depiction of Legion’s faulty information is a mystery that is yet to be revealed.

3 Legion’s Pronouns Are All Over The Place

Given Legion’s identity as a mechanical construct with a shared consciousness, it’s easy to see why he would refer to himself as “we” all the time. However, there are times when Legion breaks this cardinal rule and uses “I” instead.

Along with this, there are times when Shepard refers to Legion as a “he.” However, that might be more to do with Shepard connecting with Legion on a human level instead of being an oversight on the part of the developers.

2 There’s A Reference To Legion’s Character In Dragon Age: Inquisition

Given the massive history of BioWare’s titles, it isn’t that surprising that references to the studio’s biggest sci-fi property would be present in other franchises as well, such as their massively popular Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Cole — a hedge mage with a penchant for speaking nonsense — ends up uttering a line in this game which states, “It always had a soul, the question is the answer.” It doesn’t take an expert to point out that this line could very well be a reference to Legion’s persona.

1 Legion Might Be A Reference To Another Companion In Neverwinter Nights 2

Legion itself is considered to be a reference to a rather unique character present from another property of BioWare, Neverwinter Nights.

In Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer, the player can recruit a companion called the One of Many — an amalgamation of several undead souls who share the same consciousness, with the character himself being inhuman as well. It’s easy to see the similarities this character shares with Mass Effect’s Legion.
