With the Mass Effect Legendary Edition out, fans are revisiting or experiencing Shepard’s adventure for the first time. The fandom is feeling a little revitalized, and it’s digging up some old questions that make the series still fun to talk about.
One of the best parts of Mass Effect Legendary Edition is that it has all the DLC, including the Leviathan mission in Mass Effect 3 that adds to the games’ lore in a major way.
Spoiler Warning for Mass Effect 3 from this point on.
9 What Are Leviathans?
Leviathans are an ancient alien race that were both the indirect creators and first victims of the Reapers. They ruled the galaxy and decided to make an artificial intelligence to solve an issue of synthetics and organics constantly going to war at some point. The intelligence turned against them and created the Reapers.
Obviously, this created many questions in the Mass Effect fandom. There is no telling if these will ever be answered, but they are fun to think about. For instance, what is their physiology that allows them to survive at such crushing depths? They are enormous for one thing, but they have also traversed deep reach of space. Does their aquatic nature extend to their space-faring abilities, too?
8 What Happens To Them After The War?
There are many questions still floating around as to the fate of many characters and races after the trilogy concludes. Leviathans are the biggest of the unknowns, as they were a race that went into hiding because of the Reapers.
With the Reaper threat taken care of, what will the Leviathans do now? Many fans actually wondered if the Leviathans will try to take over the galaxy and become a new threat.
7 Where Is Their Home Planet?
Every alien race has a home planet, and the same must be true of the Leviathans. Since they are aquatic, maybe their home planet was completely under water? Did they have underwater cities there?
Due to how enormous and intimidating these aliens are, it would be fun for fans to see what their home planet really looked like and how it made them how they are. Again, would it be mostly water given their appearance as aquatic beings in the game? Fans have very little information to use in extrapolating what kind of planet they might have come from.
6 What Did Their Technology Look Like?
The Leviathan race is far from humanoid which makes one wonder what their technology was really like. Are they all organic or are they all part machine? Did they have weapons like guns or laser swords? Maybe they just used their psychic abilities since they already enthrall other beings.
It is all hard and even a little funny to imagine with the Leviathans being so large and resembling squids. But the Thorian also existed and its technology was biological as opposed to mechanical. So anything is possible…right?
5 How Many More Of Them Are In Hiding?
There is no population count of how many Leviathans are actually out there. Despite their size, they have managed to be totally hidden for an incredibly long time due to how deep water can get on various planets (assuming they must be in water to survive).
It is possible there are many or many fewer than one first imagines. The unknown of how many of them are actually out there is a little frightening. It is possible the Leviathans themselves do not know the answer to this question since some or many may have gone into total isolation while hiding.
4 Can They Really Be Trusted?
When an alien race have the ability to mind-control others, can they ever be trustworthy? Even apart from that, their history shows that they consider themselves better than all others and want to rule over the galaxy based on that.
There is no way they can see Shepard as an equal, despite Shepard’s achievements, so it is possible they just lied about parts of their history and their overall desires. They are an ally made in desperation to defeat the Reapers, but that does not mean they can be trusted.
3 What Was Their Culture Like?
Aside from technology, there is also culture. Fans know next to nothing about Leviathans outside their role in the creation of the Reapers. There are all kinds of questions to be asked such as what sort of social systems they had, what they thought of death, what kind of government did they set up, if they did art, or what structure families would have.
Understanding their culture could give insight into why they thought they were better than others.
2 Did They All Agree That The Star Child AI Was A Good Idea?
No race is a monolith unless they have hive-minds, but even then, there are abnormal individuals among them. The heretic Geth are a perfect example of that. So how many Leviathans can be blamed for the creation of the intelligence that made the Reapers? Was it a small group, a giant societal vote, or just one scientist?
The same can be said for the few Leviathans that agree to help Shepard against the Reapers. Do they all truly agree, or do they refer to the opinions of a leader? This backtracks to the question as to how many Leviathans there actually are, as well. Did Shepard manage to get most of them to help or just an isolated group?
1 How Far Can Their Mind-Control Reach?
This is one of the scary questions to think about. From what is seen in the Leviathan mission, their mind-control can reach very far naturally. It can reach even farther with the aid of objects like the artifact that afflicted Dr. Ann Bryson.
What if their mind-control can reach even further than that and Shepard did not even witness the extent of their power?
