Outside of the protagonists, Revolver Ocelot is probably the character most synonymous with Metal Gear. After all, the cunning individual has appeared in most entries in the series and played a big part in each one. And he is certainly one of the most popular characters the franchise has to offer.
From his revolving tricks to his western iconography, the villain is very cool. Yet, what truly makes him stand out is his constant switching of allegiances. The ultimate strategist is known for being a double, triple, and possibly even quadruple agent at times as he’s not loyal to anybody – besides perhaps Big Boss. So, during the series, Ocelot joined plenty of different groups, and here are all of them.
12 The Philosophers – Joined After Birth
Long before The Patriots were around, The Philosophers were the world’s most dominant organization. They were a secret group of rich and powerful people from the United States, the Soviet Union, and the Republic of China that had significant influence over each country’s government.
Ocelot had little choice in joining The Philosophers as after his mother, The Boss, gave birth to him, he was kidnapped by them. And he ended up being a part of the organization for many years, even into adulthood – something that not everyone knows about the character.
11 NSA – Brief Stint In 1960
While the Metal Gear series invents plenty of organizations, they also include some real-life ones like the National Security Agency (NSA). Ocelot’s time with the United States intelligence agency isn’t a well-documented one, however.
The only thing the games tell you is that Ocelot was a codebreaker who, alongside someone named EVA (not the one from MGS3), defected to the Soviet Union in 1960. Surprisingly, he was only 16-years-old at the time of his defection.
10 GRU – Joined Young And Stayed With Them For Several Years
How Ocelot got started with the GRU is unclear as there are some contradictions. For instance, EVA claimed that he was taken in when he was young and raised by Colonel Volgin, yet that conflicts with the story of him being an NSA codebreaker.
Regardless of how he joined the GRU, Ocelot stayed with them for several years, even becoming a Major with his own unit – due in part to being the son of The Boss. However, he wasn’t always loyal to the agency as he secretly worked with others while serving Volgin.
9 KGB – Served As A Spy For Them During MGS3
Ocelot was at his most deceptive throughout Metal Gear Solid 3 as he worked for multiple different organizations. On the surface, he was a GRU Major, but he was also simultaneously working for the KGB.
The game only made his allegiance to the KGB known right at the end when he had a conversation with their Chief Director. The specifics of Ocelot’s mission were unclear, but the main objective was to hamper Nikita Khrushchev’s reign as the leader of the Soviet Union, giving the KGB Chief Director the chance to take control.
8 CIA – Also Spied For This Organization During MGS3
Along with the GRU and KGB, Ocelot worked for the CIA throughout the third Metal Gear Solid game. Once again, you didn’t know this until after the credits, when he had a conversation with the CIA Director.
In the discussion, Ocelot recounted all of the big things that happened during Operation Snake Eater, much of which benefitted the CIA. Yet, the most significant thing Ocelot did for the agency was to retrieve part of the Philosopher’s Legacy for them.
7 The Patriots – Founding And Long-Serving Member
After The Boss perished, Zero decided to use the money from the Philosopher’s Legacy to create a new organization that was supposed to unify the world as The Boss had wanted. He recruited Big Boss, Donald Anderson, Dr. Clark, EVA, and Ocelot to be founding members of the group known as Cipher, later called The Patriots.
In the early days, Ocelot served as an informant for the organization while residing in the Soviet Union. He would engage in a complicated relationship with the group in the following years as he sometimes worked with them and occasionally fought against them. He remained among the evilest characters in the series, regardless of his relationship with The Patriots.
6 Diamond Dogs – An Influential Member During MGS5
Throughout Metal Gear Solid 5: Phantom Pain, Ocelot was heavily involved with the formation and growth of Venom Snake’s private Military Company, Diamond Dogs. He regularly offered advice and intel to Big Boss’s phantom during the game. Plus, he was responsible for training many of the recruits that Snake brought in, including a puppy that would become D-Dog.
Uncharacteristically for Ocelot, he never betrayed the group. Yet, he did still have some secrets regarding why Diamond Dogs was established in the first place.
5 FOXHOUND – Served Under Liquid For A Few Years In The 2000s
After the dissolution of the Soviet Union and the apparent death of Big Boss, Ocelot took up mercenary work for a while. Eventually, though, he was recruited by the United States Special Forces Unit named FOXHOUND.
Ocelot decided to join the elite unit because it was established by his hero Big Boss. And while a part of the group, the revolver expert served under his mentor’s clone, Liquid. As this time was never shown in the games, Ocelot’s adventures as part of FOXHOUND are unknown.
4 Sons Of Big Boss – The Group’s Second-In-Command In The First MGS
Liquid Snake might have been the primary cause of the Shadow Moses incident from the first game, but Ocelot was the one to convince him to do so. The two of them, along with other FOXHOUND members and the Next-Generation Special Forces, formed a new group called the Sons of Big Boss due to many of them being influenced by the legendary hero.
During the insurrection, Ocelot served as Liquid’s second-in-command. However, the cunning agent was also working with Solidus Snake at the time, which was another post-credits reveal.
3 Gurlukovich Mercenaries – Worked With Them During The Tanker Chapter Of MGS2
In the Tanker chapter of MGS2, Ocelot joined forces with Sergei Gurlukovich and his mercenaries as they infiltrated the USS Discovery to steal Metal Gear Ray. Their alliance was short-lived as Ocelot wasn’t really allied with Gurlukovich in the first place.
The Revolver expert simply used the former GRU officer to get his hands on the Metal Gear under orders from The Patriots. Ocelot ended their working relationship with a flurry of bullets that killed Gurlukovich.
2 Sons Of Liberty – Solidus Snake’s Second-In-Command For MGS2’S Big Shell Incident
Two years after the USS Discovery sank, the Big Shell incident occurred. This time, Ocelot was involved with a new group named the Sons of Liberty, lead by Solidus Snake. The leader of the crew’s ultimate goal was the rid the world of The Patriots, and Ocelot served as his number two.
The rest of the team included Dead Cell members and the remains of Gurlukovich’s mercenaries, who didn’t know Ocelot killed their leader. Another secret the villain had was that he was still working for The Patriots at the time, unbeknownst to Solidus. So, naturally, Ocelot created problems for the group. Luckily for him, though, he didn’t have to fight them all as the Sons of Liberty includes some of the strongest Metal Gear villains ever.
1 Outer Heaven – The Leader But As Liquid Ocelot
Many years before MGS4, Ocelot had started using a mix of hypnosis, psychotherapy, and nanomachines to transform his personality into that of Liquid’s. His idea was to pretend to be possessed by Liquid to trick The Patriots and give himself a chance to bring them down.
By the fourth game, Ocelot’s personality was basically no more, and he had become known as Liquid Ocelot. This new man led Outer Heaven, which was a company that contained the five largest PMCs in the world at the time. Ocelot eventually perished while a part of the organization.
