The Outsiders and Funcom announce Metal: Hellsinger, a game that looks like a musical version of DOOM. The game is part of the Summer of Gaming, an event that will also feature the Cyberpunk 2077 Night City Wire reveal.
One of the surprise game announcements from IGN’s first Summer of Gaming stream was Metal: Hellsinger, a game where players shoot and enjoy music as they fight through eight levels of hell. Pre-alpha gameplay shows how Metal: Hellsinger players will be able to blast enemies to shreds, becoming more powerful if they are able to do that to the beat of the rock metal music. The game is in development for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
Music rhythm first-person shooters are having a bit of a moment. Last year, Harmonix released Audica for virtual reality headsets and while it’s unclear how well the game sold, reviews of it were very positive. The trailer may frustrate those who don’t enjoy it when characters in gameplay trailers fight to the beat, but as an entire game, Metal: Hellsinger could find success.
What could hold the game back, though, is that it has been heavily compared to DOOM. It’s difficult not to compare Metal: Hellsinger, a game set in hell, to DOOM, which is also set in hell, but fans of the Bethesda series may feel that this is a cheap imitation. The reviews of DOOM Eternal were so good that Metal: Hellsinger could have difficulty trying to follow it.
Metal: Hellsinger will be released in 2021 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X.
