Be an unwilling bug in Metamorphosis, a game that’s inspired by the works of Kafka and the movie The Fly.
Who’s ever wondered what it might be like to be a bug? Nobody? Yeah, me neither. But in Metamorphosis, you experience exactly that. You play as Gregor, an unfortunate sap who wakes up one morning to find he’s slowly turning into what appears to be a cockroach. His friend, Joseph, is being arrested for reasons unknown, and it’s up to you to use your newfound stature to figure out just what the heck is going on.
Metamorphosis publisher All In! Games recently posted a new trailer that showcases a bit more of the game’s gameplay, while also showcasing many of the levels you’ll find yourself traversing using six legs instead of two. While the view is definitely from a bug’s perspective, it’s not entirely accurate as bugs see into the infrared and also have segmented eyes so everything should be a little more fragmented.
The more of the trailer you watch, the stranger it gets. Apparently, bugs have some sort of tiny underground society filled with bug villages and bug office towers where other cockroaches toil away doing paperwork. It’s all like a mirror of our own society, only in microcosm. Is this all a critique of our modern world? Probably. It seems artsy enough.
The game also mentions Kafka, a famous German short-story writer and novelist, as the inspiration for Metamorphosis’s hand-drawn world. There’s also mention of something called “The Tower,” which seems to be a reference to Kafka’s 1926 classic novel, The Castle.
This trailer provides us with more questions than answers, but the Steam page reveals Metamorphosis to be an indie adventure puzzle game where you try to figure out the mystery of who (or what) turned you into a bug.
Metamorphosis arrives on PC, Xbox One, PS4, and Nintendo Switch later this year, but if you’d like an early taste, head on over to the game’s Steam page for a free demo. Also, check out Metamorphosis in the Steam Game Festival and watch developer Ovid Works perform some gameplay demos.
