As the first full week of 2019 comes to a close, many video game companies are preparing for a big year. As such, gaming industry experts are also preparing for the year ahead by putting out predictions that they expect to see over the course of 2019.

GamesIndustry.biz has released their annual article, asking a panel of four expert analysts for their 2019 predictions. Some insights are surprising, while others are a little less creative. One of the more eye-catching predictions comes from Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities, who believes a new entry into the BioShock franchise will be announced this year, with a release date of sometime in 2020.

Pachter unfortunately doesn’t get into too much detail as to why he believes a new BioShock game will be announced. Based on the accuracy of his gaming industry predictions from last year, it is probably best to take his BioShock prediction with a grain of salt. For instance, last year, Pachter correctly predicted a battle royale mode coming to Call of Duty, but that was really the only semi-impressive prediction. (Was anyone actually surprised that Call of Duty adopted a battle royale mode?)

While it would have been nice for Pachter to have added some additional color to support his prediction, the prediction itself might actually have some merit.

In a Kotaku article published in April 2018, it was reported that a top-secret 2K Games studio was developing a new BioShock game; potentially, the first full-length entry into the series since 2013’s BioShock Infinite. Nothing has been revealed since the rumor dropped, but perhaps Pachter has some behind-the-scenes insights into the rumor that the rest of us don’t. If a new BioShock game is in fact in the works for a 2020 release, it seems this year’s E3 would be as good a place as any to make the announcement… but we will have to wait and see.

In the meantime, the rest of the prediction article is a pretty interesting read, especially in regards to the possibilities of subscription and cloud-based gaming - a business model that the entire industry is talking about.
