Back in May of this year, Microsoft began a marketing campaign to promote upcoming Xbox One games and news each month. Dubbed “Xbox 20/20,” it was supposed to be a catchy way to get users excited about any new releases. The company used it shortly after its announcement, then hasn’t kept up with it since. There’s a solid reason for that, as it turns out: Microsoft dropped the branding without telling anyone.
As discovered by Eurogamer, Microsoft will no longer be calling any of its presentations “Xbox 20/20.” Possibly because it missed a stream in June, the company has seemingly stepped away from the monthly promise and is simply going to announce any pertinent news when it happens.
The company has even gone so far as to update its May blog post announcing the branding with a retraction. “After reassessing our programming for the rest of the year,” the update reads, “we’ve decided to stop using the ‘Xbox 20/20’ phrasing as it implied that we would be releasing information in one way only, through a dedicated monthly show.”
What this mostly means is that there won’t be a single stop for all of your Xbox related news. Microsoft will be revealing things when it wants and evaluating things on a case-by-case basis. Halo Infinite is obviously going to get a ton of attention, but it may not be smart to lump in indie titles when talking about a premier Xbox franchise.
“We’re going to share that news in a variety of ways,” continues the update. “It may sometimes be a dedicated show, YouTube videos, partnering with others, or sharing the latest via Xbox Wire. We want to stay flexible with how we connect with you.”
Maybe it’s a bummer that Microsoft isn’t taking the Nintendo Direct approach, but then Nintendo appears to have abandoned that as well. 2020 has been an exceptionally trying year and tons of industries have been turned upside down. With plans going out the window every other day, maybe it’s for the best that Microsoft stops trying to cram a ton of news into a single segment. It just would have been nice to have a single stream to get current updates.
