Our Smash lord and savior the mighty Sakurai finally revealed which member of the ARMS roster will be joining the ranks of Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. While many predicted Ribbon Girl or Spring Man due to their prominent places as figureheads of ARMS, and others may have wished for Twintelle due to her just being awesome, the character chosen turned out to be the lovable, dragon-armed Min Min.
That’s great news for Min Min fans, but her addition to Ultimate is actually a big deal for an entirely different reason. Because Min Min broke one of the last remaining cardinal rules of who gets to be a new Smash character.
It’s impossible for every video game character that’s ever existed to be added as a Smash fighter. So, as a consolation prize, the concept of Spirits was added to the game to allow cameos from popular gaming heroes and villains who couldn’t get to be full-fledged roster members. As a result of this feature, it was commonly assumed that anyone who was made into a Spirit couldn’t become a Smash fighter. That’s why cult favorite characters like Geno from Super Mario RPG were often considered ineligible to join the cast.
Well, you know who else was a Spirit? Min Min.
That’s right, the newest Smash fighter is also a Spirit. This means that all that talk about Spirits not getting to be fighters was complete nonsense. With Min Min joining the cast, everyone who was previously thought to be off the table is now officially back in contention. There’s now no excuse for beloved personalities like King Hippo, Knuckles, Shovel Knight, or the Ring Fit Trainers to be excluded from participating in these grudge matches. But most importantly of all, this gives just a sliver of hope for everyone who keeps praying that somehow, someway, Waluigi will finally make it onto the roster.
There are no rules left when it comes to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate. Not only is practically any notable figure from video game history able to climb into the ring with Mario and company, but now any of the Spirits lingering around the game could potentially jump in as well. Everyone from Animal Crossing’s Able Sisters right down to Pokemon’s Zygarde could be the next piece of DLC coming to the Fighter Pass 2.
So come on Sakurai, it’s time to make things right and make Dixie Kong a fighter already. She has a cool ponytail! What more do you need?!
