Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ reign as the top-selling game on the Nintendo eShop has ended, as it has been usurped by Minecraft Dungeons.

According to Benji-Sales on Twitter, Animal Crossing: New Horizons was the #1 game on the Best-Sellers list on the US version of the eShop for three months. Animal Crossing: New Horizons has seen incredible success since launch, managing to challenge the likes of Pokémon Sword & Shield in terms of sales. The lockdown period has led to a lot of people with free time on their hands and Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been a popular choice of game during this time, especially when Ring-Fit Adventure (the other popular Switch game) is impossible to find and cannot be purchased digitally. As such, the digital version of Animal Crossing: New Horizons has been selling lots of copies, but its three-month reign at the number one spot has been taken by Minecraft Dungeons. This means that an Xbox Game Studios title is currently #1 on the eShop.

These positions don’t reflect sales figures. Neither game is the best-selling game on the Switch (that title belongs to Mario Kart 8 Deluxe) and it’s highly unlikely that Minecraft Dungeons has outsold Animal Crossing: New Horizons’ lifetime sales. It remains to be seen whether Minecraft Dungeons can hold onto its position.
