A recent interview with Minecraft Dungeons Game Director Måns Olson has revealed that the original inspiration for the upcoming blocky hack and slash was actually Zelda games. This is rather different from the more frequent comparison to Diablo games which it has been subject to since its announcement.

Olson reveals that in the initial planning stages of Minecraft Dungeons, it was envisioned as a single-player experience for the 3DS, offering a small but enjoyable new take on the world of Minecraft. After testing multiplayer capabilities, however, the team decided that the game was far more enjoyable with friends.

There aren’t many Zelda games that are multiplayer, although they do exist, and that is because the format of Zelda games tends to work better for a single-player experience. It makes sense that after shifting to a multiplayer focus, the team at Mojang would opt to find new inspirations in the likes of Diablo and Gauntlet.

Still, it is rather interesting to see just how much a game concept can change over time. This is especially true for Minecraft Dungeons, which started as a passion project and swiftly evolved into something that a lot of people were interested in. Eager fans don’t have long to wait now before getting their hands on the game.
