A new Minecraft snapshot update was just released, and with that comes new content. While there were quite a few changes and additions made this time around, the star of the show is undoubtedly the Glow Squid. Back in 2020, fans voted for the next new Minecraft mob, choosing Minecraft Earth’s Glow Squid over the Moobloom also from Minecraft Earth and the evil Iceologer from Minecraft Dungeons.

It didn’t take long, and now the fan favorite Glow Squid has been officially added to Minecraft, but there’s a catch. At the moment, this creature still doesn’t spawn naturally, so players shouldn’t expect to start seeing it out in the wild in their survival games. The only way to get the Glow Squid to spawn currently is by using a spawn egg in creative mode.

Since Minecraft Earth is shutting down this year, the introduction of the Glow Squid is a nice way to keep that game’s legacy alive. These squids glow brightly in the night making them easy to spot, and when killed drop a new item called Glow Ink Sacs. These can be used on signs to make the text bright and easy to see regardless of the time of day. It can even be used to illuminate item frames.

Along with the Glow Squid, players will now find Glow Lichen in caves. This is a dim light source that might be difficult to notice at times, but it can be harvested with shears or spread around with bonemeal. This new addition will no doubt give players new ways to create incredible builds.

Minecraft is available now on Mobile, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
