Major League Baseball has announced on Friday that it will be hosting its first virtual baseball season with thirty MLB athletes. Players will face off in MLB The Show 20 on the PlayStation 4. In this virtual season there will be 29 three-inning games in April, and the top eight will advance to the playoffs. The top two teams will face off in the World Series!
It’s fair to say that the players competing in these games are financially well off, so rather than play themselves for a personal cash prize, MLB has teamed up with the Major League Baseball Players Association and Sony Interactive Entertainment to donate a total of $175,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of America and Canada.
MLB is not the first sports video game series to make its way to mainstream media following the social distancing efforts of most of the world. NBA 2K recently saw its formal season scrapped and has moved to a variation of online-only tournaments featuring some of the best players in the world. ESPN also made a leap of faith by airing twelve hours of esports straight on April 5.
There are several places where players can catch the virtual baseball action, including the MLB Network’s Twitch channel, Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter.
