As many eagerly await the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, a community of talented fans have taken to developing mods for the game. One modder recently announced a mod allowing players to access a new minigame where they can race through Luigi’s Circuit from the Wii version of Mario Kart.
The modder, who goes by Waikuteru, has gone all out on the details. The minigame, complete with an original NPC interaction, features a detailed rendering of Luigi’s Circuit, as well as obstacles, such as boulders and bouts of flames, which must be navigating while racing on the Master Cycle Zero.
As soon as Waiketeru posted a video of the mod on youtube, people were impressed with the clever fusion of Mario Kart and Breath of the Wild, and rightly so. Waikuteru has been creating mods for the game since January of 2019 and their skills are apparent. Details such as the way that Link catches fire when hit by flames from traps and the dialogue with the NPC that lead into the minigame really serve to elevate the mod.
Furthermore, the minigame functions as a time trial. Players who can prove that they beat the record time that Waikuteru has set for the circuit are encouraged to reach out via Discord to claim an additional prize.
At the moment, the minigame has only been made available to Waikuteru’s Patreon supporters. However, a wide release date of August 18th will make the mod available for everyone else. In the meantime, Waikuteru has a number of other mods they’ve made and plans to continue creating them until the release of the sequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
There are tons of other mods out there, all of which tweak different aspects of the game. Some allow players to replace Link with Jon Snow from Game of Thrones or Link’s horse with Thomas the Tank Engine. Other mods allow players to access items from different games such as the Deku Shield from The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time or different weapons from Fire Emblem.
