It’s been 11 long years since Kasumi’s Stolen Memory DLC for Mass Effect 2 originally launched. That’s a lot of time and a lot of life since my first encounter with the master thief. I’m a different person now than I was back then, with over a decade’s worth of new experiences that have shaped how I enjoy things. As I’m revisiting Mass Effect 2, I realize that meeting Kasumi this time around stings a little bit more than it did back in 2010....

As if needed to be said, when Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain finally comes out next month, gamers are in for tons of engaging gunplay, stealth-driven tactics, as well as an epic, geopolitically-themed nuclear espionage narrative steeped in the blood of Big Boss’s – that is, Solid Snake’s – adversaries. Kingdom Hearts: Melody of Memory has touched on what to expect from the title through trailers, but the information provided only gave a surface glance. It’s well known the title will be a rhythm-game, and August’s Nintendo Direct Mini revealed that the Switch version would have five different game modes while the PS4 and Xbox One will have four. Capybara Games’ latest digital title, Super Time Force, is now available on Xbox 360 and Xbox One and it’s totally with your time. Cruella is only the latest of Disney’s series of attempts at remaking other studios’ successful films using their own IP. “So we have a story about a classic, irredeemable villain who is known for thoroughly enjoying their own wickedness with a laugh … except now it’s an origin story in a ’70s-ish setting where the villain is now a sympathetic nobody who’s beaten down by the people on top, a twist involving their parentage and the main ‘antagonist’ of their story, and a scene/trailer set to ‘Smile’ by Nat King Cole....

The first official image from Netflix’s series about Blockbuster has been revealed. Ironic, because Blockbuster could’ve bought Netflix a long time ago, but elected not to. “Netflix isn’t really in a position to gloat these days, seeing as how it’s being forced to reckon with the reality of the ‘there must always be growth!’ business model it adopted a long time ago (blame capitalism, not Netflix), but there’s no harm in relishing past glories when times are tough....

No matter how thoughtful, original, or nuanced the conversation might be, most of the chats I’ve had about Mass Effect 2 have gravitated towards the exact same topic: the suicide mission. It’s a great mission! I even interviewed some ex-BioWare devs about how the whole game was built around it. But there are better missions in Mass Effect - Ilos is the one that immediately springs to mind. There are also better missions in Dragon Age, Mass Effect’s fantasy sibling - in fact, the suicide mission owes far more to Thedas than it does to the Milky Way....
